Not bonding with new cat

About 2 weeks ago, my husband and I decided to adopt another cat, we already had two, but decided another one would help with the age difference/energy levels between the two older cats. He was amazing in the shelter, wanted pets, cuddly, we thought it was a perfect match. Fast forward, we take him home. He’s playing really rough with our younger cat, and attacked my husband and I in the same couple days. All he does is meow constantly and is just annoying. We don’t feel like he’s our cat, we aren’t sure what to do. Pls help.

My friend just passed today

My beloved friend, a 14yo cocker spaniel, who loved to sleep on us, feasted on treats and at every day of her life showed all her love to us and to everybody around had to be put to sleep this morning because of a non treatable tumor and liquid in the lungs.

I would give everything just to hug her once more

Pet-safe cleaners effective at killing bacteria?

Hello! Recently fostering a cat and hoping to adopt. I have never owned a pet before and I have medical anxiety which has led me to be possibly excessively paranoid of zoonotic diseases you can get from pets due to bacteria (for example, a cat tracking something from the litter box and jumping on your counter). I also really want to keep things clean since he has FIV and I hope to prevent bacterial infections for him as much as possible.

I have lots of cleaners, but I'm afraid they might to be too strong for use around pets. Any suggestions for a cleaner that is effective in killing bacteria, etc but safe for the animal? Thanks!

Roommate just got diagnosed with being allergic to cats and wants me to keep cat in room

I just moved into a apartment with 3 other girls by my college and they were all random. I was originally supposed to live with my friend but she’s allergic to cats and I was bringing my cat. I found three girls looking for a roommate and I let them know I have a cat and they said it was completely fine and that one of them had a cat too. So I moved in with them and it was all fine. My cats a little crazy but nothing too bad he’s just very active. The other girl with a cat keeps her cat in her room all the time, but I don’t really feel good ab doing that and they didn’t have a problem with me letting him go around the apartment. A couple days after I move in, one of the girls told me that when she got a allergy test for something else, she found out she’s also allergic to cats but that she wasn’t really concerned because she has lived with cats her whole life and it was never a issue and that he was fine to go where he wanted. It’s about a week later and she texts the group chat saying that she is waking up with sniffles and would appreciate if I keep my cat in my room because she’s allergic. I’m very upset ab this and don’t even know what to say. It was very important for me to find a good place for my cat and didn’t live with my friends to do so. I would have never signed there if I knew this would happen and I’m not understanding how she thought it would be fine a week ago since she’s always lived with cats but now it’s a issue. Any advice with what to do? I feel like they won’t understand my frustration since the other gir is ok with it, but she’s always just kept him in her room, but to me that just feels neglectful :(

Why aren't there companies that make pet meds formulated specifically to be palatable?

Pets have way better smell and taste than us. You can put a drop of some med in a pound of Fancy Feast and they won't touch it.

My best friend is a vet tech and he says that the struggle of owners trying to give meds to their pets is very real and is wondering the same thing about the industry seemingly being totally oblivious to the fact that this is a gold mine opportunity.

I would personally pay a premium for this.

Pill pockets don't always work, and owners are sent home with meds that they struggle to administer because not everyone is a vet that can do it in 3 seconds.

Is there such a thing as an internal GPS?

Had an encounter with a stranger being really weird about one of our cats. The cat, who is usually quite social, wanted nothing to do with the woman who approached her. Naturally, this worried my mom and I and so now:

I'm wondering if there is a type of microchip that can utilize GPS? Or perhaps a very discreet GPS tag/collar?

Advice on how to get rid of the smell of enzymatic cleaner?

We have a very sweet cat that very inconsideratley pees outside her litter boxes on things we care about, and are not easily cleaned. My partner has taken the whole gamut of steps everyone recommends, with significant improvement, but not total solution. So, we still have to use enzymatic cleaner now and then, and I *can not* stand the f**king smell of it. It's only marginally better than the stink of cat piss itself to me. And given that it too is enzymatic, it stays around strongly, and apparently forever. I can't stand my house smelling like it.

I would love to know if anyone has had success in eliminating the smell of enzymatic cleaner from rugs in particular, esp. because it's impossible to find answers to this specific question using search engines. THANK YOU in advance!

How do I cope with my cat's last moments being painful/scary?

Does anyone else find it difficult to cope with seeing their baby in pain towards the end? Our cat Gandalf was FELV+ and he got sick about two weeks ago but was mostly in good spirits even though it was obvious he was deteriorating. We had a vet appointment scheduled for Monday, but Sunday shortly after we gave him a bath with a wash cloth he started meowing and squirming around in pain. We made the difficult decision to rush him to the emergency vet 20 minutes away and have him euthanized. The vet said it was possible that he had a tumor suddenly burst.

It's frustrating that even if every moment of their life until the end is happy, the last moments being difficult is hard to bear. I hope me and my boyfriend being there and stroking and kissing him as he slipped away helped in some way. For those who have experienced pain or distress at the end, how do you cope? I can tell myself a lot of things to cope with the feeling of loss and not feel sorry for myself, but I cannot shake feeling bad for Gandalf. I love and miss him so much and I hope he was okay in the end.

The cat that stayed behind runs away frantically when the spayed cat approaches : ( Right now I have them separate in different rooms. I keep the spayed cat close to me to monitor her wound. I visit the other one as often as I can.

We just want the best for our buddy as a dog lover. It’s certainly a step in the correct direction to buy a dog harness. A harness can provide more control in most situations and it also spreads force uniformly around the chest of your dog as it begins to pull his leash, reducing any discomfort or damage. As different dogs have different personalities so choose a dog harness that goes with the personality of your furry friend. Also, it is ideal to select a padded harness as it will offer more comfort. The most important thing that should be kept in mind is the size of the harness. Always select a harness that will fit perfectly around your dog’s neck because a tight harness can cause muscle and neck pain.

Canary freaks out with corn cob

Have a canary he's not that old and he loves corn on the cob. Problem is, when I put half a log in his cage he freaks out and basically squawks angrily throughout the rest of the day and won't touch the cob till 2-3 days later. Is there a way to introduce it into the cage so that it doesn't freak him out and hurt my eardrums with dying chicken squawks? He seems to like the task of picking it off, so I don't want to cut the kernels off

Ethical Question

Is it wrong to keep my two cats in my room all the time? It’s a decently sized room and they have an extra walk in closet with a cat tree/litter. I try to give them lots of toys they like as well as things to climb on and room to run around (which they do) even if it’s somewhat in a large circle. I just am afraid to let them out with my brothers aggressive pit bulls and numerous expensive things they could eat/chew. I usually go to class for 5-6 hours 4 days a week but spend every second home with them outside of that. I play with them and take good care of them. They don’t seem mentally unwell or distressed, but I just want the best for them. Any tips or thoughts?

Moving with my cat into a new home that has a dog.

Due to unfortunate circumstances i’ll be moving with my cat into my aunt and uncle’s house sometime in the future. I’m only 16 so I don’t have any other options. My cat hates other cats but I haven’t really seen how he acts around dogs. The new house has an old shih tzu dog and I’m wondering if I can get any tips on how to make the adjustment easy and comfortable? Shelter vs. Euthanize

I had a cat that i have loved dearly. Wife wanted to get it. I was cool without a pet, yet I'm the one who adored it, took care of it, etc, etc. Long story short, we HAD to get rid of it after 7 years. No choice, period. I wanted to euthaunize choosing quality of life over quantity of life ( ie: giving it to a shelter or rehoming). What i find ridiculous is the across the board bashing i received of possibly ethaunizing. Many people live in la la land thinking many people are going to want their fluffy, well behaved cat or dog. The fact of the matter is that its just not true. And its possible the new home causes undo, long term stress of your pet. Stop being ridiculous. Euthanizing is not necessarily a bad thing in an overcrowded shelter system.

My cat keeps peeing on my bed!!! Help!

I am honestly on my last nerve right now. For a little backstory, my boyfriend and I adopted this cat when he was 8 weeks old. He’s a bombay so high strong & needs LOTS of love LOTS of attention. anyway, we are recently moving but before the apartment is ready we deciding to move in the in laws to save some money. we still have another month here. he is currently 10 months old and ever since he was a kitten, we’ve brought him over a lot so he was well-socialized. anyhow, the move was super easy. my cat adjusted super well and started roaming and sleeping next to everyone during the day. well at night, we keep him in our room with his food, water, kitty condo and litter so that he doesn’t destroy their furniture. he’s been fine eating and using the bathroom, it’s just that he’s been having more accidents recently. in the past, i wouldn’t let him into my bedroom because the only time he’s had an “accident” was on my bed. but because of the circumstances, we have no choice. we’ve been here for like 2 weeks and he’s already had 2 accidents within 2 days of each other, today and yesterday. the vet says nothing is wrong and he uses his litter perfectly fine every other time. it seems like early in the morning he wants to be let out and starts crying and when we don’t hear him, he pees. please someone tell me how to stop this because it’s driving me absolutely nuts.

Why do people equate pets/animals to humans?

I’ve never understand the obsession with pets, primarily dogs and cats. To me they are no different than a squirrel or groundhog unless they were my pet. Many people somehow want to take it to the next level, to engage their dogs and cats as equals on a deeper emotional and spiritual (if not intellectual) plane. Some even equate them to humans and choosing between saving the family dog or a neighbors kid from a burning house is a difficult choice. My theory is that since encounters with other human beings is generally difficult, it’s much preferable to dote on our pets, which seem to love us unconditionally but which promote no demands other than a bowl of food and a walk. Further, they remain in a state of furry innocence which is a balm against the real world. Am I close my dear pet lovers?

Thinking of returning my cat

I feel so stupid. I’m a 23 year old student who moved away from home in the summer to start my Accelerate Nursing Program, which will last until this time next year. Over the past few months I’ve had difficulty making friends, managing my right schedule, and have felt really sh*tty and overwhelmed. I toyed around with getting a cat because the thought of having a cat snuggling me at nights when I feel super down would be wonderful. My roommate said I could get one if I wanted. So on one particularly bad night I impulsively filled out an application for one. The main thing I was concerned about was a) is he friendly and b) can he get along with our dog? Yes to both of those. He is very affectionate and I do love when he cuddles with me in bed. Except I guess I completely decided to throw away the fact that all animals need to adjust to a new home and learn manners. My roommate is pissed at me because he keeps scratching the couch. I bought lemon spray, multiple scratching posts/boards, and will even try to put those sparkly nail caps on tomorrow. He keeps going on the countertops. I personally don’t get annoyed by this too much and know he will learn, but she does. She makes snide remarks about the cat and I think, what did you expect? But honestly, I wasn’t expecting this either.

But the worst part is is how he keeps me up at night. I need my sleep. For school and my mental health (I have bipolar). I schedule his meals, play with him when I can (except I can’t always - I also work late at a store), and try to ignore him as best as I can at night. But this is becoming too much. I can’t afford to buy any more things for him. I’m so tried and stupid for thinking a cat would make me feel better. It’s just been another source of stress. It’s been a week now and I don’t want to rehome this sweet guy but I might have to. I feel like even more of a failure in not being a good pet wonder. What should I do?

How to eat canned cat

As we said, the first point is that before opening the can, the cat should be kept in a cool, dry place. If the can is opened, do not leave it out of the refrigerator for more than 4 hours. In other words, if canned cat food is out of the refrigerator for more than 4 hours, you should definitely throw it away.

You can keep each opened can in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days. If canned cat is not consumed, you should throw it away after 7 days. You can transfer canned cat food to a glass container or place a plastic lid on the can to keep it fresh.petshop online

Please give me advice!

It's a very long story but i unwillingly had to rehome my dog a couple of months ago. I know he is okay but i miss him terribly. The new owner lives very close by like literally a few blocks away and i have politely asked him whether i could see my baby every now and then. He said he understands and it was no problem. He once dropped my dog off and i spent a few hours with him. I didn't think it was good for him to be at his old home so i took him to the dog park but the new owner told me he was gonna be late for hours. So i ended up taking him home eventually. After that i politely asked him if he could let me know when he walks him outside so i can see him for a couple of minutes. Because i didn't want to plan something like this again as it was hard and painful and also he was very fickle in terms of hours. He said he would but he never did. Now it's been a month since i last saw my baby and i am thinking of him and worrying about him daily. It's time for his heartworm med. 😭😭 How do i deal with this? Is it okay for me to write to him or should i learn to let it go? I am truly miserable.

How to approach a situation about my neighbor's cat

We just moved into a small apartment complex. We all have (6 of us) little standalone houses and share common areas. Sort of a very small gated community. Having said that we don't live in the nicest area. It is an old small mountain town. We live in Southern California, so when it gets hot, our town's homeless population increases a lot. Also because it is a mountain town, we see some wildlife around, coyotes, bears, etc.

We have a neighbor couple and they have two cats. Since the houses are extremely small, the cats are free to roam outside. They don't have collars. When we first moved, I thought that the cats were strays. One of them (which is a 7-8 month old Russian blue kitten) is very friendly and sometimes comes to hangout around our house. When I thought that it was a stray, I occasionally fed him. Then one day when I was petting the kitten, the owner introduced herself. I apologized for feeding the cats as I thought they were strays and she seemed to not have a problem with it. I stopped feeding the cat and just left out some water for them from then on.

In the last 2-3 weeks, some weird stuff is going on with our neighbors. About 3 weeks ago they had a huge fight, where the male partner punched and broke their furniture and dented their truck. A couple people called the police because they were scared for the women. It was a super ugly and scary fight. Since then there were some other fights - not as intense, but we see that they throw away a piece of furniture everyday. I think they sold the metal security door for money, it is gone. Their fridge has been on the common area for the last week and I think they are trying to sell it (it belongs to the apartment complex). I think the women also found a new job, because I don't see her car anymore, maybe only at nights.

Since then the cats have been out all day everyday. They are there when I wake up in the morning (and I suspect they don't let them in at night because I get up at 5.30) and they are there at night. During the day I see them lying around under the cars. The kitten seemed to lose weight and feels much lighter. I gave the kitten some food 2 days ago and he seemed very hungry. I left a little bit of food since then. What worries me is I know I am not supposed to feed other people's pets, and I am afraid to get caught. But I think these cats are being neglected and I feel very anxious thinking they are suffering. I leave the food in a not very obvious spot - the cat learned it. We don't let him in. Our contract doesn't allow us to have pets, I have no idea how our neighbors can have them. I want to ask them but to be honest I am afraid of the man, after seeing how he got violent during their fight.

What should I do?

Any advice on fleas?

We have 2 cats, 4 dogs and 4 chickens (tho they might not be an issue here) and my sister noticed fleas on her cat 2 days ago, our other cat is an outside cat and only comes in to eat really. We’ve bathed all of the animals twice (outdoor cat included) disinfected our whole house washed sheets and clothing etc and gave all the animals flea collars. I was just sitting with my sister and she noticed some “crumb” looking things on her cat, upon parting the hair, a flea crawled out, and back into her fur. She’s at her whits end with this, as obviously cats don’t like baths, and this would be her 3rd flea bath this weekend. Does anyone have any advice on other solutions?

How to get cat to stop pooping on the floor randomly?

My cat has been to the vet and has hypothyroidism, but besides that no medical condition that would warrant pooping randomly.

She will poop in the box- and then the next second she’s pooping next to it or in the next room. It’s becoming a huge problem for my family- and if it continues my parents say they’re going to put her down because there’s “something wrong with her” and I absolutely cannot allow this.

We have two boxes, and use the spray stuff that covers the scent of things and we clean her box 4x a day. I don’t understand what this issue is.

A month or two ago, she wasn’t doing this. It started out of nowhere and it’s stressing me out, I don’t want to have to put my cat down I love her too much.

Is it bad to pet puppies at a pet store without intending to adopt?

My boyfriend and I have two cats and we do not want more pets, however we really love animals and we have been wanting to find some puppies to hold and pet just for the joy of it. But I want to make sure that isn't considered rude to the pet store or inconsiderate (I'm sure it's probably weird but I doubt im the only one who has wanted to hold a cute puppy without taking it home 🙂). Thoughts?

Flying with 2 Adult Cats

Hello! Does anyone here have experience or information about how I can fly alone with two adult cats? Everything I'm finding says that I can't, but I've seen people fly alone with two pets before. Thank you!!

Would I be wrong to ask my roommate to buy her cat her own food and litter?

I [20F] have a roommate [20F] that barely does anything for herself. She used to eat all of my food instead of buying her own, wear my clothes instead of getting hers from her parents and just take some of the things I have just because she needed or wanted it.

She got a kitten about a month and a half ago. Literally the only thing she has bought for her kitten is a playpen and a tag for a collar. She doesn't pitch in any money for litter, food and she uses my bowls I had for my cats to feed hers. On top of that she doesn't feed her cat, I do and I also clean the litter boxes. She could AT LEAST clean one but I have to ask her to every time and I am honestly tired of asking her to do things she should be doing already. I have three cats of my own including a kitten less than two months and I don't think that it's fair she assumes that all the stuff I buy for my cats she can also use for hers. Litter and food isn't cheap and three cats are enough. I didn't sign up to take care of four. Is it fair to ask her to buy her kitten her own things and stop sharing mine?

my dog is acting really weird and I'm lost

Hello! I'm a dog owner and have raised my dog for about 6 years and we share a very close bond. She is a neutered mauzer and never had any previous medical conditions. These past two days, she's been acting really weird. She started hiding under my bed for hours, and two days ago was also the first time she's ever laid down there. She's highly restless and very often stops abruptly to look up and sniff the air. She used to love my pets, esp on her head and often licks me to get me to pet her. And previously, when I sit on the floor with her, she would very excited sit on my lap for me to pet her. However, these two days, she seems to be avoiding my touch and whenever I touch her, she moves away. She also started sitting beside me or behind me instead of on my lap. I also noticed other behavior changes such as she used to very regularly bring her favourite toy to my room to place it there and would even whine when I do not open the door for her to do so. She did not do that for the past two days. I'm confused that she seems to be avoiding me but if she were, she wouldn't spend hours in my room, under my bed, even when the door is open for her to leave right? I can't see any physical changes to her body or anything similar. I'm not sure if this is anything special to now but I noticed she pants in the middle of her rest, even after she's been lying down for a while? She's also still interested in treats when I feed her and plays fetch excitedly still too.

Due to circumstances, I'm unable to bring her to a vet for the next few days. I'll be very grateful for any advice or insights on what could be happening to her. Had anyone else faced this before, and if yes, what happened? Thank you so much.

Thinking about surrendering my cat.

I spontaneously adopted a 2 year old, short hair white and black cat named Chicken about two weeks ago. I’m starting to regret this adoption. As a main point: I was under-prepared for this and it’s making me stressed.

The first week was the most difficult. On his records it said he was a low activity cat. He is far from that. He constantly wants to play and requires attention. His crying and meowing at night exemplified that. Fortunately, he’s learned recently to stop meowing, however I still have to wear soundproof headphones while I sleep because he has the zoomies and will play with his toys. I live in a studio so I can't go into another room. I feel bad since I'm in school and work for most of the day.

I didn't fully comprehend the financial component of owning a cat. Coincidentally, I received a major blow to my income after adopting Chicken. I don't know if this sounds messed up, but when I've been spending money on Chicken for his cat tree, his food, his toys, etc. I think to myself "I could've used this for myself".

The most dumb thing I didn't take into account was; who would take care of my cat while I'm gone? My parents don't want to care for him, I can't afford a pet sitter, and I hate the idea of forcing my problems on my S/O when she's already got her own cat. I feel restrained to my apartment since I can't just leave him alone for 24 hours.

One of the main reason's why I adopted a cat is for some emotional support while I'm in school. However, the stress from the previous examples provided overtakes the affection given by him. I don't feel like I get anything out of him being sweet. It doesn't feel rewarding.

Despite being very affectionate and more energetic than expected, he's actually a shy and nervous cat. Whenever someone new walks into a room, he immediately hides under the couch. He managed to burrow a hole inside the couch so he hides there now. I've attempted to block off all underpasses inside my studio but he get's stressed and starts hissing.

By all means, Chicken isn't "ruining" my life. He's not making me pull my hair out or anything. If anything, I feel like I'm not fully equipped to provide him the best life he could have. I’ve always loved cats, I’ve always wanted one since I was a teen. However, I think it might just be the wrong time for me. I feel really lost and need some advice.

Abandoned puppies

So, I already have one very large dog, and i have plans to have another dog of mine back in my possession. Last week at the dog park i found that someone had abandoned 6 puppies (they are about 3 months old) overnight. I spent about 5.5 hours at the park talking to people to see if anyone wanted a puppy. In the end, i brought 5 of the 6 home. It took me 2 days to rehome 4 of those 5. I am really glad i was able to hime some kf the puplies in pairs. Everyone is local and they will also get to see each other at the dog park. I still have one of the puppies and even though it would be a lot of dog, i intend to keep him as well. 🙃

Cat went missing while my friend was cat-sitting

I have two cats and they are my everything and I have such a hard time trusting anyone with them. I went on vacation and halfway through got a call that someone broke into his house and left the door open, letting my cats out. One was found under the house a few hours later, and the other has been missing for almost three days. He’s only 10 months old but we’ve have him for about 7. His home is my apartment in another city, so he’s not very used to my friends house and especially not the neighborhood. He was born outside but from my understanding he wasn’t out long before someone found them as kittens. We have flyers up everywhere, notified everyone on the block, put one of their litter boxes out as well as food and water. He’s very shy so I feel like he’s in a very good hiding spot. It’s been raining off and on since he went missing. We’ve walked the block and neighborhood two straight days. I feel like I can’t leave him to go home, but is there anything else I can do besides waiting now? My friend will keep his eye out and we still have the flyers up. Thank you for any help.

My cat has not come back home in five days.

My house cat turned indoor/outdoor cat has been missing for five days nearly six. He comes in at night but if he is not around when I go to bed he stays out at night. He has been an outside cat for 3 years so he knows his territory very well and has never had incidents like this before. I live in a rural area with wild coyotes and bobcats, but in the 3 years of my cat being outside he hasn’t ever been attacked. A neighbor had reported that they had heard coyotes on their property around the time of his disappearance [the morning after] but that was over 400 ft from my cats territory. I’ve searched our entire property for evidence of him and have found nothing. My family has told me that he is probably deceased or badly injured and cannot make it home, but I haven’t given up on him. Do you think my cat is ok?

Cat might have been in a fight. I have a couple of questions.

My cat recently got a scratch on her head. I didn't notice until I started petting her. The scratch doesn't look too bad and I will continue to monitor it, and she is up-to-date on her vaccines, but should she go to the vet and get another rabies vaccine, and should I get a rabies shot since I pet her after she was injured by an unknown animal?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Has anyone adopted their foster cat?

I was planning on fostering a 10 week old kitten for a few weeks but have fallen in love with her. It’s my first time fostering and I’ve really bonded with her, and she’s bonded to me too. She comes to her little door in her playpen when I get home and follows me around. She is my little girl 🥰

It wasn’t really in my plans to adopt a cat, and having the commitment of a pet scares me a little as I have lots of life stuff to figure out (starting my career, potentially moving to another state). I’ve made myself as mobile as possible without any commitments….but now I can’t imagine giving her back!

She makes me so happy. And I think maybe I just need to work her into my plans. My mom also suggested we have “shared custody” of her so there’s flexibility, and I know that my mom can look after her too.

Has anyone been in this position?

Best way to get rid of wafting cat smell around the garbage bin?

Hello~ I’ve been looking after someone’s cat for a couple months and it’s been going well, the cat is very chill, neutered and doesn’t spray. I bought a pack of doggy bags for the poop and pee because my garbage bin doesn’t have a lid. I’ve noticed some areas around the bin have been smelly. He’ll be leaving next month so I wanted to see if there are any good ways to get rid of the smell.

Can cats be effective alert systems? Even to the level of dogs? Are there cats who are trained to make loud screeches when an intruder is around (including outside)?

Lately there's been traveling vagabounds where I live in Detroit. I notice my cat has been at the window lately and whenever someone other than the mail man s outside in the yard I hear a glow growl while watching TV. So he's been a good indicator to search the window for possible troublemakers.

Last week I was awaken at 2 AM by a loud screeching sound. When I went out of my room to check downstairs I saw a someone at the second floor window suddenly scrambling to climb down and my cat on top of the shelf hiding in the dark with claws out on a paw like he was getting ready to hit a mouse and his hind legs in a position ready to jump. His loud screeching scared the burglar on the spot and when I looked down the window he was climbing down the downspout. He reached the bottom and fled in terror.

A few nights ago I fell asleep watching TV n the living room and my cat would jump on me and wake me up hitting my face. I realized there was someone at the door. I checked through the door peephole and saw some people with bandanas. So I turned on a small machine that makes an alarm sound and got a baseball bat. I could still remember hearing the bandana guys yell cuss words and then flee for their lives yelling while I saw them running through the camera on my phone about cops coming by.

Every few nights, my cat looks like he's been making some rounds walking around up and down the stairs when I sleep in my room before finally sleeping on the top of the shelf of my first floor near the door. As if he was a security guard. Just last night I even heard him screech all the way from the first floor. As I was coming down, I saw him climbing the stairs and then waiting near the entrance o the second floor bathroom.

I could hear voices coming from the second floor bathroom. When I checked the bathroom, I saw a hand pry that looked like it was trying to open one of the bathroom's windows from outside. But suddenly I heard someone yell "*#@%!!!!" and saw the pry drop in darkness and I could hear someone jumping down from the second floor to the ground. So despite being downstairs, my cat screeched because he noticed someone trying to reach the second floor and was with me as I was checking the bathroom.

So I am curious. For years people was telling me I was stupid for buying a cat over a dog because they tell me cats are useless as a home security and dogs re the best way to go.

But as the past two weeks how, I now call absolute BS on that belief. My cat may have saved me from theft and possibly a sucker punch even murder. Cat ma be small and not effective in a direct fight with an adult man but he helped me spot possible threats!

So I am curious if cats are far better watchguards than we give them credit for? Esp in the face of criticism from dog lovers?

Can cats actually be trained to be a house patrol in the way dogs are?

I am just so surprised esp since I never taught my caught to be a home security system. He was basically just a toy I keep on my lap when I work or watch TV. So I was surprised coincidentally as crime was increasing where I live, he suddenly is now a mini patrolling mobile camera system for home protection!

What input can you give?

My cat hates his kennel and becomes very aggressive when moved to a new place in his kennel. I just evacuated a hurricane to my friends house and im sure ill never be invited back again for future disasters.

I don't know what to do with him. When hes in his kennel and has to be moved somewhere he is SO aggressive, like I'm afraid to get seriously hurt aggressive. If I relocate him temporarily I have to get a huge moving bin with a lid to move him because he will attack me if i try to put him back in his kennel. He cannot even go to routine vet checkups without being put under anesthetic. I have tried everything. I feed him in his kennel. I give him catnip in his kennel. That has only made it easier to get him in the kennel initially but after that he is a demon. It is a serious problem because hurricanes are an annual thing where I live and he will have to be evacuated sometimes. My friend is so upset with me over this cat (i did warn him that my cat would be furious and this was going to be stressful but idk if he realized just how bad it would be). Right now we have my cat in the bathroom. He has laid claim to the bathtub and we need to fill the bathtub with water as part of hurricane prep. My cat tries to attack us if we go near the bathtub. I have no idea what to do with him. My friend has said I should just abandon him or have him put down but I have had him since he was a kitten and he is very sweet when a kennel is not involved. I don't know what to do.

Are my neighbors bothering my cat?

I adopted a 5 month old cat last week and she is having trouble adjusting. She’ll only play with me if I reach under the bed and she barley eats throughout the day. However, at night she comes out, she runs around, she plays with all her toys and scratcher, and she’ll eat and drink. My downstairs neighbors have 4 extremely noisy kids it basically sounds like a construction zone downstairs. It is nonstop till around 10 PM.

Does she only come out at night because she’s still adjusting or does the noise in the day make her uncomfortable?

Male Cat Won't Stop Peeing Outside Box (HELP)

So me and my boyfriend have a male, maine coon mix named Smitty (he is fixed). We got him about 8 months ago and all was going well for the first few weeks that he was kept away from our other animals (we have 1 dog and 3 other cats...all female/fixed). Smitty was kept in my office while we slowly introduced all of the animals and he peed and pooped in his litter box fine, however, once he was left to roam the full house he immediately stopped using the various boxes in the house (we have 6 boxes...1 covered, 1 automatic cleaning, and 4 just plain boxes). We've tried everything from various litter types, anti-stress plug-ins, moving the boxes to where he is peeing (he pees and poops RIGHT next to the boxes), we clean daily and use enzyme cleaners to clean the mess (we have carpet unfortunately). My boyfriend is getting fed up as recently he started peeing under his gaming PC desk and told me I have to figure something out because nothing is working and he thinks giving Smitty up is going to be the next move. I love this cat and he has brought me so much joy and I don't want to lose him but I understand my boyfriends frustration as we really have tried everything and he just doesn't stop going outside the boxes. We've taken him to the vet and they said medically he is fine and is in great health...he also gets along great with all of the other animals in the house and I work from home so I give them all plenty of attention...I really am just so lost on what else I can do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

New pets causing severe anxiety

I really need non judgemental advice.

Has anyone ever got a new pet and it caused mental health issues to worsen?

I planned for the kitten and had weeks to prepare, I was over the moon when I collected her and welcomed her into my home like a baby. She needed alot of care as she was only 6 weeks(I wasn't aware at the time she shouldn't have been separated from her Mom), so I had to syringe feed her and wean her. She's doing great now.

I feel though now I've made a huge mistake, I'm having panic attacks every night since getting her and I don't even know why. Then I feel guilty for even thinking about surrendering her. I have a son too and he adores her which makes the situation ten times worse.

I just really don't know what to do

Left my dog at my aunts house

I went on a 4 day road trip and I left my dog at my aunts house. He’s 2 years old and she has a dog that’s a tad bit bigger but he’s old. He’s white and has little hair. My dog is small, black and furry. While i was on the road, i asked my aunt how he was doing and she’d send videos and pictures of him and said he missed me. Today she called and asked when i was coming to pick him up and she told me he had pooped in his cage. She said she cleaned it up. My mom picked him up (i stayed home) and when she walked in the door she was steaming. He had pooped in the car and it looked a little like diarrhea but I’m not sure because right before i dropped him off, i switched his food (wrong on my part). He had poop all over him, but he was running around outside like he was excited and happy. I noticed he had a huge mat of hair on his ear. While i was giving him a bath, i noticed he had a small red spot on his nose. Also a bunch of dead fleas came off as well. I’m furious because i feel like they didn’t walk him enough or maybe it was the food? He had used that food before with no problems, or maybe it was his treats?? Maybe he ate something he wasn’t supposed to at their house? Today, I’m trying to take him to the groomers so they could get rid of the mat and give him a haircut. And tomorrow or Monday I’m taking him to the vet. I’m sorry if maybe this post is pointless I’m just venting i guess and need some advice because i just feel overwhelmed by all of this.

Edit: it’s very uncommon for him to poop anywhere other than outside because he’s very well trained. The only time he would poop in the house is very very rarely and it would because he’s sick with an upset stomach.

[UK] Looking to buy/ rehome a 17 month old maltipoo bitch. Red flags?

Found on Pets4Homes as a private seller. They’re selling their family pet as they no longer have the time for the dog and are separating. Text and spoken over the phone to the seller who seems genuine however I am concerned that the seller she bought the puppy from originally was not genuine, and about the quality of upbringing the puppy had. She went to pick up the puppy from the home and said it was a clean and tidy.

Red flags: She bought the dog from a private seller (no license), no receipt of sale, seller saw the puppy with her puppy siblings (that looked happy and sociable) but not with it’s mother as it was ‘out for routine checkups’ at the time, paperwork from first vet has the wrong breed name on it which has been changed now to a maltipoo. She has not been spayed yet.

I am conflicted because this is my first time buying a dog, the seller seems nice and sounds like has provided the dog with a really lovely home and the dog seems to have a good temperament Etc. however I’m just not sure about these red flags and wanted to know if I was over reacting. Price is very reasonable for the breed.

We are due to meet at her home for a visit on Monday.

Any help appreciated.

Looking for pet recommandations

Hello fellow pet lovers,

My girlfriend and I are starting to seriously look into getting an animal to love.

I'm going to try to follow a format kind of close to the one on r/dogs, as it should cover most bases.

Previous animal experience

We individually have had dogs, fishes, a rat and a turtle. I have also been around cats a semi-fair amount but never had to actually care for one for any lengthy period of time. I tend to read a lot about animals I'm interested in, so I also know how to care and bond in theory with some more animals that I have not had the chance to interact with, something I would look to do at least a bit before actually committing to an animal - as a matter of fact, we are hoping to do a bit of that at an animal expo very soon.

Living arrangements

We are young professionals, in a small flat. Space is at a premium, but we are willing to sacrifice some of our 350 square feet (32-33 square meters) to have a cage/enclosure/bed/litterbox. We have a medium sized bedroom (mostly filled by the bed), a bathroom, a small kitchen and a living room where we would be most likely to install our pet.

We are living in a neighborhood full of communist-era blocks with green spaces in between, so walks are not a huge hassle if our animal might benefit from them.

We do not have any other pets currently, and if we were to add another one, the elder would have preference in term of suitability. We also do not have kids, do not plan to have any, and doubt that there will be much contact between any young humans and animal.

Care

There is a certain level of care we are willing to accept. Feeding, meal prep (if necessary), cage/litter cleaning, that's to be expected. Things that might be beyond our reasonable allowance would include excessive grooming (I'm mostly thinking about some dogs like the puli, the komondor, the afghan hound, etc) or having to develop colonies of feeder insects - she does not like insects, so insectivores might be avoided preferably.

In term of attention and exercise, I work 8 to 4 (with my current job allowing pets at work, but the other ones I'm applying on won't), and my girlfriend is working remotely at least 4 days a week for the foreseeable future. Our evenings are free 99.383% of the time, so we would in theory have a couple hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening of focus, plus a very frequent day presence.

Legality and availability

I don't really expect that anyone will know much about the laws and availability of my region, but it doesn't hurt to try: we are living in Poland. ''Aggressive'' dog breeds require a permit, that's the only legislation I could find with a quick look - still, don't suggest high level predators or animals that are basically illegal everywhere, if possible. I am also not sure if there are certain species that are impossible to find around these parts, but suggest anyway and I will do my due diligence regarding availability and quality breeders or rescues.

Our landlady is not on board with snakes, and would probably object to most other reptiles. Not that we were specially interested.

Preferences

Obviously, we already have discussed the subject a lot. The main criteria we are agreeing on are:

  1. Must be willing to cuddle, preferably on our terms
  2. Must not be extra noisy - we would like to avoid conflicts with our neighbors
  3. Preferably diurnal or at least be willing to interact during our waking hours

We then have minor objections, like extra smelly (since the cage/litterbox/etc would be within 3 meters of the dining table), fluffy is a plus, not too small or fragile to avoid accidents, preferably does not need insects (specially live ones). It would also be great if the animal could be let free under decent supervision, in a space made safe. Reptiles, amphibians, insects and arachnids are out, and so are rats and mice.

Our budget is...well, let's say adequate. We are not looking to spend like crazy, but we are also not going to restrict ourselves to a couple of mice because that's all we can afford. We are also aware that low prices can mean bad breeder.

Some examples of animals we are keeping on our mind: dogs (following which I might do the actual r/dogs questionnaire), cats (I am partial to the Savannah, mostly, but she would need to strongly bond with any feline), guinea pigs, rabbits, possibly chinchillas and hedgehogs. I am also personally very partial to aracaris, but space, price and possibly veterinary could be definite issues.

However, if you have other ideas, shoot away. I could be forgetful of many great species. I would also be glad to give more precisions if needed.

I'm moving to a new apartment, and there's something that's been worrying me about my cat

So .. we're moving to a new apartment that's on the 2nd floor ..and I'm worried about something In the old apartment ( which was on the ground floor ) we used to have like a protection grid for every window ...so that it keeps my cat from jumping out of the window , so my cat was safe And now , in this new apartment we have the normal "regular " windows with no grid ..so I'm asking for help .. I've been wondering , do cats know that jumping out of the window from a pretty high distance is dangerous ? Will my cat try to escape or jump ? If it's yes ..then how do i stop him ? Should I try to make him adapt to the new situation so that it'll be aware of the risks ? And how would I do that ? , Is there any other solution ? I feel like I wasn't clear enough , it's just that I don't know how to explain the situation , sorry for bothering everyone .. and I'll really appreciate the help ( The thing is...if it was for me ..then I'll definitely put a protection grid ..but it's my family's new house so i can't really do anything 'cause my parents won't let me do it ..but if I'm really obliged to ..and there's no solution , I'll try to convince them )

A neutered male cat with unfixed female

We might not be able to get our cat spayed due to certain health issues and risk regarding anesthesia.

With that said, she doesn't really make much fuss when in heat- and doesn't spray or yowl either. She's a pretty tame girl overall.

I've always wanted to adopt a male (whom we'll neuter at 4 months old- before any sexual behavior appears at all). I'd like to hear the experiences of those who have seen or had a neutered male cat living in same household as an unfixed female. How was it? Did they get along? Did it work out in long-run?

Need advice about my dog with terrible seperation anxiety

Hello people of reddit,

I need some serious advice for my dog who does nothing but barking and scratching doors as soon as she is without company. Me and my sister are the only ones looking after our dog since our parents got divorced. My parents house I currently still reside in, is on sale and I have to move towards student rooms/dormitories (dont know the english term) soon. My sister already has a room she is allowed to keep pets in, but she will only ever take the dog when she has days off because otherwise her roomates will make noise complaints about the constant barking.

This is going to be a huge problem when I move out, because I'm gonna be facing the same issues. I have no one else who is capable of looking after my dog on days I have to work/study. Finding a room that allows pets is no problem, but finding neighbours who accept the constant noise my dog creates is impossible. And who can blame them.

I need some serious advice on how to either make my dog stop barking when I'm gone, or I need some kind of service that can look after dogs while not being crazy expensive. As a college student I obviously don't have enough money for premium services. I only earn €350 a month with my weekend job.

I love my dog more than anything else, even more so than some people in my family. And I really don't want to lose her. She is a 13 year old female continental toy spaniel / papillon dog if it matters. I've tried buying her toys but she doesn't like to play with them. How can I teach my dog to be more content and relaxed on her own?

Any advice is seriously appreciated,

Thank you

My cat ran away 3 months ago and I finally caught him (advice needed)

This is kind of a long story but I want to make sure I cover everything.

My cat Blaze got out of an open window about 4 months ago. For about 1 of those months I spent every day checking facebook, next door, shelters, everything I could think of because I hadn't seen him. I left food out every single day and used every technique in the book to draw him back. I walked around my neighborhood daily and asked every single person there if they had seen him.

Around Late June/July he showed up on my ring camera overnight. I kept leaving out food in hopes that I would be able to just let him back in, but when I'd see him and open the door he would run away. This persisted for the next 2 months. I would try to talk to him or get near him when I'd see him and he'd immediately run away. I started setting humane traps on my patio where he was showing up in hopes that I could catch him, but he would never go inside of it.

I even started leaving my window open in the evenings and managed to get him to come inside, but after eating he would just leave again.

Finally after 4 months, I was able to trap him. I isolated him in his own room and he absolutely FREAKED out when I let him out of the trap. Like he actually started bouncing off of the walls. After about 10 minutes he calmed down and wedged himself in between some storage bins.

He looks like he has a bad eye infection because he can't seem to open his eyes all the way and they look very red and bloodshot. Someone else suggested that maybe he had the eye infection the whole time he was lost and that's why he kept running away, because he couldn't see me very well?

I don't know how I'm going to get him into a carrier and to the vet because he needs to go asap. The only reason I didn't immediately take him while he was in the trap was because it's 3am and the vet doesn't open until 8:30 and I don't want to leave him in there for 5 hours. I'm so worried about him because his eyes look so bad. He doesn't seem skinny at all so obviously he's been eating; but I'm worried about his overall behaviour since I am definitely not a cat expert. He seems terrified of me and my other cats, one of whom he was bonded with.

Please share any advice or similar experiences because I'm scared I'll never be able to have my old blaze back. He was so loving and sweet. Can a cat's behaviour change that much in 4 months? Can he become semi-feral?

Can’t get rid of fleas

We’ve had ticks every year in the summer but never too bad but this year we’ve been dealing with fleas for the first time and can’t seem to get rid of them. I have 2 dogs and one of them is on flea and tick medication and never gets any on him but the other one has a history of seizures and has had a bad neurological reaction to both heartworm preventatives and flea and tick medications. I’ve been trying a natural spray on his body but they have moved to his face (around his eyes) where I can’t apply the spray and won’t come off. Any help would be greatly appreciated I am desperate

Cat expressing anal glands when happy / relaxed

Is this normal? Today was the second time on the 7 weeks I’ve had him that he’s done this.

The first time he was purring on my lap and then I noticed a really pungent smell and he started to clean himself and try to clean me.

The second time he stood up from the cupboard for me to hug him while purring. So I hugged him and and then I noticed the smell and some spots of brown liquid on the cupboard under him. He quickly licked the cupboard and then himself after it happened.

He was just at the vet for a check up two weeks ago and they said he looked to be in good health but I forgot to mention this anal gland discharge.

Do I need to take him to the vet again for this?

I need advice presenting a dog to my cat

So my case is a little special. I live on an apartment, my cat (female, don't know if that makes any difference) has been living here since she was 2 months old, she was on an animal shelter and was abandoned by her mom when she was newborn, she has only seen the 2 other cats in the shelter in her life. What I'm trying to say is that she has never fought for territory or food like many cats. She's now 6 years old. We're bringing a dog home soon, it's a rodweiller and it's a baby from my friend's dog. I need advice presenting them because I don't know if my cat never fighting for territory or seeing another animal in general makes a lot of difference in the way I need to present them so any advice is greatly appreciated.
