What should my new pet be?

As a disclaimer, I do plan on going through a rescue for whatever pet I get.

I currently have a 7 year old cat that I love very much, but being the animal enthusiast that I am, I want more. I have grown up with all kinds of animals and work with wildlife, so I am not concerned about difficulty of care, my concern is a pet that fits my lifestyle and not too high in cost. So I cannot afford a horse for example.

I am away from home for 11 hours, 5 days a week for work. I also have a small child who is used to being around all kinds of animals. I own my house so problems with what is allowed is not an issue. My main issue is my time and cost.

I debate on a dog, but in order to get a dog, i would obviously need a dog walker and the cost associated with that on top of typical vet bills, heartworm meds, food etc, I wonder if it is a bit much right now. As badly as I want one, i wonder how fair it would be to the dog for me to only be home a couple hours before going to bed during the week and only able to do much on the weekends. Though my child LOVES playing with dogs. I am not a fan of small dogs though. I prefer shepherds, Rottweilers, Malamutes, etc. I am used to these large breed dogs.

I may get another cat. They are easy and cuddly. I think regardless, I might get a second cat, but I also want another type of pet. I have considered fostering older cats as well. I love cats very much, but I already have one and while like I said, i will probably get another one anyway, but I want a different type as well.

I am also thinking of a ferret. I have never had one, but had friends who have. Their biggest gripe with them was the smell. For me, I think these would be great except the their need for constant supervision when they are roaming around and I am tired from work. I could ferret proof a room, i do have a whole room not being used for anything. My concern with them is time for them to play while having to be careful of what they get into. I couldnt bare the thought of one dying because they opened a drawer or something. Any advice on a ferret and getting around these concerns would be appreciated so I can make the best choice.

The other pet I am considering is sugar gliders. I have done a ton of research on them, though I never owned one. I figure they sleep while I am at work and I can care for them while I am at home in the evenings. I think it would be awesome to have them, and I think they would fit with my busy schedule. My house is pretty calm and quiet. I could even take them to work after bonding with them. I work in an offce that is pretty quiet and no one would mind them being there with as small as they are. They would sleep anyway and the place is pretty quiet. However, my concern with them is ongoing costs to maintain a proper diet. I havent owned one and am not sure how the cost of their diet compares to a cat or dog overtime and same goes for any vet costs since they are exotic. I can handle vet bills, food, toys, etc for your cats and dogs, but not sure if these would cost more. I also don't know how they behave and have seen different answers. Like do the bite? Are they playful? Are they chill and cuddly?

I am open to other ideas. I have also considered setting up an enclosure for a fox, i have plenty of space for one, but I think that will be when i have more time. The pets I listed are the ones I am considering. What do you guys think?
