Hello!
We're adopting an older chihuahua from our local shelter, Franky.
Franky was found wandering the streets of Sacramento. He was taken from their over-populated shelter last month and sent to my local Humane Society.
For an alleged stray, he is very sweet. He crawled right into my lap, put his head on my knee, and went to sleep. Franky loved it when my husband gave him some scritches, but he clearly wanted to just cuddle with Mom. He's also very well housebroken, leading me to believe he was once a beloved pet. He gets along well with cats, which is great, since I have those too! (They did a cat test. I did not want to adopt a pet only to find out it won't work. That's just not fair to anyone.)
We're aware of the general concerns with owning an older dog:
-
Fatigue
-
Weight gain
-
Joint pains, problems with mobility
-
Teeth concerns
-
Sensory (eyesight, hearing) loss
-
Internal organ concerns (such as renal failure)
Are there any special concerns with an older, short hair chihuahua? My Google-fu doesn't seem to yield much beyond what I've already looked at. I know that they can have a life expectancy of 15-20 years, if properly cared for. We want to do everything we can to ensure that the remainder of Franky's life is spent with health and happiness.
