A little backstory : My cat is about 16 years old and since the end of last year he has been having trouble with diarrhea and as a result he has lost a lot of weight over the course of only a few months.
Also I'm not a Native Speaker so excuse my bad English. I'm also not sure if this is the right subreddit since I'm new to reddit.
Since last Sunday the condition of my cat has gotten way worse. Until today he basically ate nothing and if he manages to take a few bites it comes out almost immediately.
This Monday we went to the vet with him and he gave my cat some injections. Apparently his circulation (?) was really bad.
On Tuesday we went to the vet with him again and he basically told us that we would need to get my cat euthanized. He even offered to do it immediately. We of course declined because we wanted to at least have some bloodwork done before we make this decision. Again he got a lot of injections. That evening we for sure thought that my cat was going to die. He wasn't making any sounds and just layed there basically waiting to die while having horrible diarrhea. That was the point where I thought euthanization would be the best way to not let him suffer anymore.
Then the next day he was suddenly behaving really normal. He was going out, rolling around in the sun and being extremely vocal again, like his usual self. Even his diarrhea stopped later in the evening and he ate something even if it wasn't much. We went to the doctor again and he said that his blood (considering the situation ) was in a better state than he tought it would be. Apparently my cat has some sort of infection. He gave my cat some injections and told us to take him home again. We hoped that his condition would stay the same or at least would get better.
Well, today everything has worsened . He has extreme diarrhea again and doesnt eat anything. He is basically slowly starving and I dont want him to suffer anymore.
The thing that holds me back from euthanizing him ( because I honestly don't think that he will get better as he is aleready pretty old and there isn't much time left because he isn't eating anything) is his behaviour. Like yesterday he is enjoying himself. Bathing in the sun, wanting to get cuddly, sleeping in a relaxed manner etc. I honestly don't know what to do. Logically he should be euthanized and that is what I think would be best for him and my family, but I feel like I don't have the right to bascially kill him as he is still seemingly enjoying his life. It just feels morally wrong to take everything away from him like that when he is behaving that way.
In the evening I have another appointment with the vet.
Do you think euthanizing my cat would be cruel considering his condition ?
