I adopted a shelter hound puppy last year when he was about 3 months old, and he's been awesome. Very friendly, super energetic and never had any issues with him. My daughter is around him all the time (she's 6 now) and plays with him every day and he never even growls at her. Recently however we started noticing that he growls at strange men (mailman, plumber, etc.) when I'm not at home and it's just my wife and my daughter. My wife usually restrains him, or locks him in another room when we're in that situation, but it all changed last week.
We had a new mailman come by the house, and my wife was chatting to him while the dog was supposed to be locked away in another room. My daughter accidentally opened the door, and the dog bolted out like a bullet, went straight for the mailman and before my wife could stop him bit the mailman on the arm. Luckily the guy was wearing lots of layers and a thick coat, so he did not break through and draw blood, but the guy was obviously shook up.
Now we're facing a lawsuit from the post office, animal control has classified our dog as a dangerous animal, we're required to muzzle and leash him at all times and our insurance policy will no longer cover any dog related injuries should he hurt someone again.
I'm really at a loss here, because I love my dog and he's become a part of our family, but with all these restrictions and potential additional costs, I'm not sure how to move forward. It breaks my heart because with us and our friends he's the nicest, friendliest dog in the world. Does anyone have any experience with dog biting, and what happens after your dog as been branded as "dangerous"?
