Pet Sitter Dealing with A violent territorial cat

I work for a cat sitting company and an employee had an emergency drop-out of a couple jobs and I'm filling in for them and one of their clients is this older, roughly 9 years old, cat that is absolutely vicious. First off he's nearly 15 pounds and has erratic hissing and swatting patterns, and when he's swat he goes at you with the urgency of a creature wishing you serious harm. Thankfully I managed to redirect its attention by throwing treats around the room but he still treated me like I just murdered his entire family in front of him. I feel for the poor cat and know that this is stressful for him but I was wondering if you have any suggestions dealing with a similar cat that could help him feel better because maybe he's acting out in emotional distress or some kind of anguish and I only want to help.
