Moved the litter box... now cat won’t stop peeing on laundry

Hi there!

I have two Maine coons. We previously had the litter box in a closet. I decided to reconfigure the situation to reclaim the closet and better contain smell. So, I acquired a really nice, covered litter box which does a great job of containing odor.

I first closed the closet door and kept the box right outside. I moved it halfway into the next room, then a bit further to it’s current location, over about a week.

One cat is doing fine. The other has begun seeking out clothing to pee on. He was doing okay until the box was moved pretty far from the closet, so I think he was confused about it being moved at first. However, he now clearly understands where the litter box is, because he uses it to poop! He also likes hanging out on top of the box cover. But he won’t use it to pee.

I clean the box daily, the type of litter hasn’t changed, and he has never had any bad litter behaviors in the past.

Nothing else has really changed since I got the new box, and he recently saw a vet, so I think it’s unlikely that there is coincidentally a health issue causing it.

Any tips on how to acclimate him to the new location, or explanations for why he would use the box for #2 but not #1? Thanks for any help :)
