Hey all, So i guess heres some info about me first. I'm 23 years old male living in a 1 room apartment.I have a budget set for a dog with a decent job. I deal with severe depression and some anxiety issue's that im in therapy and treatment for and doimg really well with. I grew up with dogs my whole life and found to have some comfort with pets. My therapist thinks I should keep the dog and supported me looking as I dont have many freinds or a support network. I feel somwhat bad just from the fact my therpist wants me to keep the dog but I know she wants whats best for all parties.
Anyways, in march I decided to adopt a dog. In this process I choose to foster to adopt a black lab 1.5 years old with very mild heartworms. I figured it was perfect to test run if we would click and worst case im not losing anything if I choose to not to adopt at the end. That time however has come for me to decide if I should adopt and I feel bad that im leaning towards not adopting. The reason I feel bad is I dont know why I dont want to adopt. I dont know if me and him really click due to my depression so the connection I romanticized isn't there. I hear exercise helps with depression but so far 15 minutes 5 times a day walking the dog hasnt helped me at all and at times feels like a chore. I also feel bad that he is basically stuck in an apartment most of the day and only gets to have fun for those walks and the 1 or 2 times a week where I play fetch with him for 30ish minutes now that he is able to exercise again. I planed to start taking him to our dog park and short day hikes once I offically own him and I can take the paperwork I need for the dog park but im delaying that untill I decide. I ended up making a pro con list which ill leave here and maybe you guys can help me decide whether or not to keep him. Pros Lifelong freind Motivator to go outside Easy talking point for talking to people Learning to love Want to care for somthing Keeping myself responsible Cons A responsibility for 10ish years Small apartment and likelyhood I may move in dogs lifetime Need to deal with poor weather with him Difficulty attaching to things Financial burden(low issue as I'm in a stable job) Need to plan things if there longer then a day to decide where to keep him No support network incase I need to board him quickly for an extended period of time
TL;DR Need advice wether or not to keep a foster dog. P.s. sorry for typos im on my phone right now.
