I need some help with my cat. I've had her for almost a year now and I feel like I have done all I can for her yet she keeps attacking me. I've tried almost everything I can think of and what the vets have recommended to me and nothing seems to be working.
I've used positive reinforcement (i.e. treats) and negative reinforcement (i.e. no's and timeouts) to try to get her to stop. I've tried rearranging everything like my vet told me to do. I've tried spritzing her with water (she likes the water). I feed and water her on time, I play with her, I wait for her permission to give her pets, but she just won't stop attacking me.
A lot of people think what I'm describing is playful, but it's not. She will latch onto me with her front legs, bite into me, then start viciously scratching/kicking with her back legs to do me harm. Earlier this month, my cat did this to me on my right arm, and the bleeding lasted for about 30 minutes despite my best efforts for pressure. I have two pretty nasty scars now. Most recently, she cut me vertically down my wrist, and if it had been like what I had just described, I probably would have had to go to the hospital.
I've talked to my mom about this (she's really good with animals), and she has advised me to get rid of my cat. Honestly, I have been thinking about getting rid of her even before she had advised me to, but there are a few things that are holding me back from doing so:
- The shelters in my area are dirty and I don't trust them, especially the one I found her at
- She won't understand why I'm giving her up
- She will probably be put down. She doesn't just attack me, she attacks my boyfriend, parents, and sisters
- I feel really guilty
If anyone has any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.
