What kind of threat can bird mites pose to my cat? Any way I should specifically deal with it?

Alrighty, here’s some context. A few days ago I was taking cans out behind my apartment building for recycle and I noticed a birds nest nestled up in a gutter-like thing on the building, right by one of my bedroom windows. I didn’t think much of it at the time, thought it was pretty neat to see birds return to my residence really (I believe they’re mourning doves). They’ve been around my apparent building for years and never really caused any problems. At least until now I think.

Recently my family has noticed little bugs crawling around on our arms and seen them scurrying across our phone screens. Didn’t think much of it until their appearance became constant throughout the days. I got some irritations on my arm, and first thought they were probably dust mites. The bugs are absolutely tiny. Today, I expressed my concern to my parents and found out that my brother also had seen these tiny bugs on his stuff too. After a sort of sigh of relief (because I was finally getting confirmation that I wasn’t crazy and just seeing things), my brother mentioned that when he was cleaning out his room earlier, he noticed a bunch of tiny bugs crawling through his window sill - that happened to be right next to the bird nest. So of course he tried to get rid of them and cleaned them off. I put two and two together, and after seeing another Redditor ask about a similar looking bug get told they had most likely had bird mites, I assume we do too. It makes sense and their bites and irritations are similar to what we’re experiencing.

So bird mites. Most likely. Yikes. I’m trying to see if maybe we can get confirmation on these bugs from an exterminator or anyone, and hope we can get serious help removing them.

But I also have a cat that I love dearly. I always get anxious whenever he acts different or seems to be meowing more than usual, y’know that type of thing. Last time we took him to the vet, it was for a flea problem back in either 2016/2017. I hate that we haven’t been taking him more often to make sure every thing is alright, my family seems to prefer waiting out a lot of issues he might have rather than taking him to the vet - I believe their excuse is always about it costing too much money.

I’ve been doing a lot of anxious googling about what to do with these bugs. Yeah they annoy me but I’ll work through them. I’m just worried about how they might affect my cat. He’s around 6 years old and he’s a tad overweight. If it’s necessary I’ll take him to the vet immediately, no matter the cost. He seems to be meowing differently and seems to be trying to get my attention in a more needy manner.

I saw how these bugs have irritated and caused bites and bumps on my brother’s skin, I’m worried about what they might do to my cat. I haven’t seen any on him yet but these bugs that we’ve been seeing are so so small that I would have to really inspect his fur thoroughly - which I plan on doing in the morning.

If anyone has any recommendations or ideas on what I should do I would really appreciate it. I think there are products that I could buy in stores to help repel them from my cat. I just really don’t know if this could become a really big problem for him and I want to get other’s thoughts on this because my family is really indifferent about it. Thanks for all your help in advance.
