Cheaper Flea Prevention?

I'll start this post by saying, I'm looking for flea prevention solutions that are effective and actually work! I've seen plenty of threads here that are about getting rid of infestations, but not many on prevention in the first place.

I've got both a dog and a cat, I used to use the frontline Spot On for each of them (feline and canine) as it was easy to pick up during a food shop and didn't break the bank.

So one day my cat, who basically lives outside, decided to bring home Fleas, that leapt onto my dog and furniture and decided to give us 1-2months of bitey infestation fun, until I Bug Bombed the whole house and took both pets to the Vet to ask for advice on getting rid of, and keeping fleas gone.

While at the vets, the Veterinarian basically said that anything you can pick up off the shelf are ineffective and a waste of money, she also mentioned that dog fleas are basically extinct and that cat fleas are the main type doing the rounds, so dog flea spot on would be of no use?

She recommended using the brand that you can get from the vets (obviously) thats too strong for a non-veterinarian shop to carry I guess, for both dog and cat, which is basically £100 every 3 months (Prinovox dog and cat), and obviously I have to go to the vets to pick it up which is quite out of the way.

So my question is - Is there a cheaper way to get the spot-on solution without going to the vets? Like the same active chemicals but not the same company? Also any recommendations you have would be welcomed :)

Thanks
