My dog is a Rottweiler/Pit Bull/Golden Retriever mix. He’s four and a half years old. This is important: he has had issues in the past with attacking older, smaller dogs, but after talking with professionals, they’ve told me they believe he is a non aggressive dog who was trying to take over the pack as “alpha” and show dominance (the dog he attacked was dying). He was raised in a house with a yard and other dogs, but unfortunately we had to downgrade when he was about 2 to an apartment and no other dogs. He gets TOO excited when he sees another dog, and it comes off as aggressive. He is simply very happy to see them, and being 80 pounds, has very little control. He’s a lot better than he used to be though, that’s for sure. It’s something we’ve been working on. He is also food/toy aggressive, which I’m very aware of. This is all important because today I have to move in with my boyfriend. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have nowhere to live until August 16th. My dilemma is: he has a very old dog. He’s at least 10, but most likely is older. I love him. He’s a miniature husky of some sort, maybe 30 pounds TOPS. These 2 dogs have never met, as my boyfriend’s dog has previously been attacked by 2 large pit bulls and it’s just not something either of us were comfortable with. I know we should’ve had them meet before I moved in. That was my plan, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out that way. I know I messed up there. However, they have been smelling each other for the last 10/11 months, my dog has been to my boyfriend’s house (in the backyard, not actually physically in the house), and they’ve actually in fact SEEN each other when my boyfriend’s dog was in the backyard and my dog was in my car and I stopped by for a brief second. So they know each other’s scents pretty well. I’m wondering what I can do to make this temporary move easiest on all of us. How to introduce them, where to put my dog’s food, should I keep them separate? Not have them sleep in the same room? One dog upstairs and one down at all times? Any suggestions would be lovely. I’m open to answering any questions and providing additional information for anyone. Thank you so much! I have to be out of my current apartment by 8 pm mountain time.
