Hello and sorry for the capslock but i am really desperate and need help. My cat has ataxia or a similar kind of disease. He is not in any kind of fatal danger but he has problems with movement. He stumbles a lot and has a hard time eating as he twitches when he dives head first into the can. He was already born with it and we went to a vet. He said that it is not any bacteria as he gave us pills for that and there was no result (meaning there was no danger to begin with)
He is now about 4 to 5 years old and looks quite happy but recently, I found out that there might be an option through a series of treatments and rehabilitation that could help him to walk better and might even prolong his life by almost a double that amount he would live with this disease.
All of the info i got was from a few articles and my girlfriend which helps in a dog shelter and had a dog with the same disease so if you know more, feel free to correct me.
The main problem is, I don't know enough to make a decision myself and the treatment can be VERY expensive. The basics can cost around $450 and the treatment can hike up to more than $2000
I presented these facts to my parents but they kind of brushed it off. They said that the cat is managing fine and the treatment would just make himself suffer more and that it is too much money to spend on a cat if he is not in pain. Now I don't know how to change their minds about this and when they told me this, I was kinda shocked, because they are both very religious Christians and I thought they would do more to help than just this.
If anyone has any advice concerning my parents or the treatment, please feel free to help me out. I'll try and keep this post updated if anything comes up. Thank you all who managed to read till the end.
