My dogs were attacked on our walk. What can I do to better prepare should it happen next time?

So I was walking in my neighborhood and there was a guy in his garage chilling with his two french bulldogs. They didn’t have any restraints and charged straight for my dogs ignoring all calls from their owner.

My dogs were not hurt, and they’re medium small so I managed to pick them both up whilst having two frenchies jumping on me to bite them.

This is the first time it has happened to me and while the situation was handled, I was a little shocked and felt very bad for my dogs. But what could I have done if they were bigger dogs? What am I allowed to do? Like yes duh, you try your best to separate the dogs. But if it really comes down to the fact another dog is trying to kill your own, what are my legal options of protection? Hit em with a stick? Low volt tazer? Am I allowed to kick their dog??

I would never in a million years want to hurt animals, but if some animal is coming after my babies, I would like to go to town and kick some ass.
