Im in college, and we're allowed to have an emotional support animal, so I filled out all the necessary paperwork and brought my cat. Thing is, he's developed some crazy levels of separation anxiety. He's always been very shy, but this is new. He won't leave my room at all (I share a common space with roommates, we each have our own bedrooms), and if I leave my room, even to go to the bathroom, he cries. I tried bringing him to the bathroom while I got ready for bed, but he sprinted out and back into my room, and began crying again.
He has never been a very vocal cat, but this is getting to him. Is there anything I can do to help him with the transition? I can't have him yelling constantly every time I'm in class.
When I'm in the room, he glues himself to me. He's always been a lapcat, but also independent at other times. Currently, he tries to lay on me practically every few minutes, and is much more reluctant to move if I have to get up. That's not a problem in and of itself, but it's another symptom.
I don't really want to send him home. My parents have too many cats (five others), and that amount was really putting stress on him. He would get attacked by an older bigger cat often, and out of fear would pee or poop on the floor. This asshole of a cat does things like bar others from the litter box too, and all this ultimately resulted in my cat developing a blockage that required hospitalization. Point is, he's better off here without so many other animals. I just don't know how to keep him calm when I'm not right next to him.
