Is it true that people can grow allergy immunities to pets?

I've had a 'hypoallergenic' cat for almost a year. I've had allergies for most of my life, but have reacted to her a lot lot less, and I find I can be around/pet regular cats now with little to no reaction. So my question is is it true that people can develop a tolerance after living with a pet for a while? Is it possible I could adopt another, non-hypoallergenic cat or does the hypoallergenic trait make a pretty significant difference? I still have some symptoms if I stop taking allergy meds, but I haven't had a bad reaction in a while now. I do find I wheeze myself awake more often than I used to but that's about the worst of it
