IVDD I need advice?

I have a 9yr old chunky yorkie To me, I thought I was helping my dog by walking him everyday and encouraging him using steps after a the walk to lose some weight or at least maintain a health chonky BOD (he is 11lbs) but I didn't know I was hurting him internally with his back. I never really knew much about IVDD until last night where my mom came home to find him in a corner not moving, legs all stiff, drooling heavily. Ever since he was young, I spoiled him with a bit of chicken here and there etc mixed with his kibble and I also lifted him everywhere he wanted to go. I just didn't like seeing him struggle jumping when he was a puppy so I got used to carrying him to places no matter what lol. I couldn't afford a single thing last night at the vet like a ct scan or x rays to check internally. I asked what it could be and they said it honestly could be IVDD and what they could supply is medication for a week since I couldnt do the other options. So I paid for the medication and they said if he didnt improve tomorrow (today which is 8/27) that means he is suffering from other issues plus IVDD. I came home today after my mom left for work and she said last night he was sleeping due to the pain medication they injected and this morning he didn't want to get up. The thing is as soon as i opened the door, he walked up to me like it was all good and greeted me, plus stretching but don't get me wrong he still was panting but I didn't expect him to be in any condition like this. I was actually preparing for the worse today since he was in awful shape last night.

My question is how will this work? is him walking around all normal again temporarily until i run out of medication? I'm treating him with extra care bed rest but I worry when he pants here and there.
