Putting my cat to sleep. What should I expect?

My 21-year-old cat is coming to the end of her life. Even though her heart, liver and lungs are all healthy, she has dementia that is getting progressively worse. The vet has said there isn't a lot they can do for her, so it's perhaps time we consider letting her go. I've never experienced putting a pet to sleep before. What will happen? Is it a long process? Can I take her home her straight away to bury her? If I choose to get her cremated, how long will it take to get her ashes? It makes me sad to think that the last moments of my cat's life will be in a place that stresses her out.
