How do I teach my dog not to pee on himself?

We adopted a 1 year old hound mix with pemphigus, an autoimmune disorder which- for him at least- causes the skin on his paw pads to harden and slough off, making walking painful. When we got him he was a mess and spent most of his time lying down. We got him on better medication, which has fixed the paw issue, and he can now comfortably walk on all fours, and even jump around. Due to his condition, he never was comfortable peeing in the typical male dog fashion of lifting his leg. He's always squatted. And unfortunately due to the way he's shaped, 9/10 times when he pees, he ends up hitting himself on the front paws. Since part of his medication regimen is a steroid, he drinks a lot and subsequently pees a lot, which generally means each time I walk him, he ends up pissing extensively on his paws which I then need to clean when we get inside. Today he topped himself by standing up halfway through his piss and hitting himself square in the chest for about 10 seconds with his own stream.

His paws no longer hurt him to walk on, so he should be able to do the one leg up thing now, but he doesn't seem to know how. How do I teach him how to pee without hitting himself?
