Hey everyone!
Relatively new cat owner here. I adopted my boy about 1.5 years ago, so he's about 2 years old now. I also have a 17 year-old dog that he's been tackling and playing with, but old smol doggo doesn't have the strength, stamina, or even the sight to keep up with him. So I thought to adopt a new cat about his age to see if they can bond and entertain each other instead of letting my dog keep getting beaten up lol.
New cat is about 1-2 years old and such an incredible sweetheart. Even though she was brought in as a stray, she loves cuddling and purrs like crazy and actively seeks out human interaction, which is why I thought she would be a great companion for my resident cat since they seemed similar in personality. My resident cat is definitely a bit more skittish though.
I brought home new kitty in a carrier today and set her out in the living room to give resident cat the chance to come up and sniff her. As soon as resident cat did, he puffed up and hissed then disappeared under the couch to sulk. I even moved the new cat into a kennel cage in the living room to give her some more room and open viewing of her new environment for a few hours to let them see each other. Resident cat proceeded to leave the living room to hide under the bed.
New kitty is currently being housed in the bathroom since I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, and my resident grouch is keeping himself comfortable under the blanket, but is very apathetic towards me. Normally he comes running when I call his name and headbutts me with the strength of a trailer truck, but he doesn't seem to acknowledge me anymore. I'm sure it's normal, but I still worry that I might have damaged my relationship with him because of the new cat. He even hissed at me a bit when I tried to pet him after interacting with the new cat.
Also they did have some face-to-face interactions with some hissing, and I've read that it was normal, but do I just let them work it out like that?
I'm definitely new to the whole multi-cat thing, so any tips, advice, and personal stories would be very encouraging! I really do hope my two cats learn to become cuddle siblings.
