BF's cat keeps throwing up her food

Hi all,

I'm new here so please go easy :)

My BF's cat is a British Shorthair silver tabby, she's a year and a half old.

He has a food dispenser with a timer that dispenses food 3 times a day with a certain amount, that over the course of the day, totals to the correct amount for her weight.

We had to do this because a) She was demolishing copious amounts of her food and then throwing up and b) The vet told us she was overweight - for reference this all happened after I moved in nearly 2 months ago, I have no idea if she was like this before I moved in. We've also cut back on the treats.

In the past 2-3 months we've tried her on wet and dry food, we've switched her bowl to a "puzzle bowl" where she had to work to get the food. The second of the two was an issue because she'd sit at the bowl all day and continually dig out as much food as she wanted, eat it off the floor and on a couple of occasions, would throw it back up.

She hasn't thrown any of her food back up since we switched her back to her automatic feeder - which is on the smallest portion possible, until today. She wolfs down the entirety of every portion, and today when she threw it up, it was like she hadn't chewed it and then swallowed, I was worried it was going to be mushy and get smushed into the carpet - it didn't, because the pieces were virtually solid. After she's eaten she will continually want food, she meows at me and my partner, will follow us into the kitchen, rub up against us etc.

How do we stop her throwing her food back up? Should we take her to the vet?
