College and pets

So before college I had my chinchilla and my crested gecko. And my moms always been weird about letting me have pets, even though it is a thing I'm absolutely in love with and passionate about to the core. Now that I'm in college I'm afraid if I get any more pets it'll cause issues between us. At this point though now that I'm out of the house and older should I even have to care about her opinion of it? She would try to shame me for essentially doing what I love
