Experienced Cat Owners, Thoughts?

I’m a first time Cat mom. i adopted a 3 month old black domestic shorthair yesterday and he’s been great so far! But i’ve noticed a few things concerning me. 1) He isn’t eating, we weren’t sure how much he ate during the day before we adopted him and when we first brought him home we left him with my boyfriends mom and she said he ate a little and explored so this one isn’t as concerning but just wondering if it’s something i should be worried. 2) he hasn’t used his litter box yet. we’ve had him for about 16 hours now and i feel like maybe he should’ve had to go by now but i’m also kinda inexperienced. He is litter box trained and we have placed him in his litter box and showed him where it is. I followed some tips from my boyfriends mom (she has 5 very healthy and happy cats) to make sure he’s comfortable. The litter box is placed in my bathroom next to my toilet. our living arrangement is small so we’re limited on quite places to put his litter box and that seemed like our best option. We got him a closed one but have kept the top off to make sure he can get in and out okay and that he’s comfortable. Would putting the top on help it feel more secluded in that area? Should i worry or is it expected of a newly adopted kitten. That’s really it those are my two main concerns and i would love and appreciate any helpful advice, tips, and thoughts on them! Thanks all so much!
