Feeling really guilty for hitting animals when I was younger

Just to preface I don't hit animals anymore or let them get hurt willingly, at that time I was really young and stupid.

My dad is really cruel to animals, he would hit, kick, rub their faces into their own urine. I would always see this when I was younger, I always felt bad and I would try to cover up if they did pee. I would sometimes hit/kick animals but it never got severe or to the level of my dad. I feel absolutely awful about it and wish I could have smacked some sense into my younger self.

I want to redeem myself by taking better care of the pets I have and spending more time with them. I still have that sense of guilt but I hope it'll go away soon.
