We found a dog on the side of the road today. I asked the owners of the yard she was in and they said she was hit by a car two weeks ago and the owner is in jail. She can't use her back legs and was literally skin and bones and I've been slowly feeding her to give her some strength. We took her to an emergency vet and found out she was chipped. The vet refused to do anything since she wasnt mine and told me to get ahold of the owner. I called the microchip company and they said she belongs to the local humane society. I would have to go through an adoption process to take her but she has to go back to them. But here's the thing, the local humane society in that area is famous for euthanizing an abundance of dogs and cats and has been under investigation. So I'm terrified if I bring her back they'll euthanize. There's a vet I'm taking her to tomorrow, my vet that I prefer for my current pets. I want to see if she has a fighting chance instead of giving up. I don't know if this is illegal I'm still going to contact the humane society but if they want to just trigger happy put her down I ain't doing it. There are plenty of paralysed dogs out there with a quality life. I am torn on what to do because I don't want to break the law but at the same time I want to help this dog. We're out in the country and this stuff happens all the time. People in our area do not care about their dogs. She has food in her belly and had a nice warm bath and is receiving tummy rubs atm. Please help me decide on the right thing to do.
