my family and i are leaving to japan on the 6th of Jan for 8 days and we are planning to leave our cat (1yr) at a family friend's place while we're away. we don't have any family members near us so our options are limited to family friends or a cattery. the problem is that my cat is extremely shy and afraid of strangers and always hides under the bed whenever we have guests over. i'm afraid that leaving her in an entirely new environment with new people would stress her out and affect her health. i've already brought her over to the family friend's place once so that she has some time to adjust but she seemed uncomfortable and scared the whole time and hid under a bed. i've decided to leave familiar things such as our clothing and her toys and bed so that she has something she recognises but i'm not sure if it will help much. my main concern is that what if she refuses to eat or drink? i've heard stories of cats dying after their owners leave for vacation due to not eating and drinking because of stress and it's really worrying me. is there anything i can do to ensure she feels safe and comfortable in her new environment? should i turn to a cattery instead? i don't know how reliable catteries are and i don't want to risk anything. i've also heard people say to not leave cats at a cattery. i'm not sure what to do, any advice would be appreciated.
