Dog Destruction Proof Cat Door?

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations/solutions. We put our cat's litter box in our basement and have a cat door installed so that the cat can go down there but the dog can't. The dog is not allowed because he likes to eat "goodies" from the litter box. Well, our cat door worked at keeping the dog out of the litterbox worked fine until our dog discovered that he can just use his nails to rip plastic frame for the cat door right out of the door. He's done this twice now: after ripping the frame out, he manages to squeeze himself through the hole so he can go down there. We've installed two cat doors now. We are planning to buy a new door and cut an even smaller hole for the next one, if at all possible, though I don't think we can actually buy any cat doors that are smaller than the last one we had. Right now we just have a door with a hole in it, which is quite drafty in winter.

Any recommendations for a cat door, that isn't like $300, that our dog can't destroy? I'm taking steps to make the litterbox less accessible for him if/when he manages to get down into the basement, but we'd like to block him out completely. He's determined enough that I'm not sure a baby gate would work (or would it?). Do you think an aluminum cat door would do the trick or will our dog just end up hurting himself?

Anyone else had this problem? What did you do?

Thanks!
