I'm sorry in advance if this sounds like a bragging/ego post, it's not my intention, but this just a little bit of back story to show why I'm kinda overprotective with him, again sorry, you can jump to the 3rd paragraph if you want.
Now, he's a Boston Terrier, his name is Beto, the most well behaved dog I ever had and is extremely clever, he doesn't bark at all unless you play a lot with him but under normal circumstances he doesn't go bonkers at the minimum noise he hears or even when he sees other dogs, he's just quiet all the time unless you play with him, not aggressive, and doesn't break things in our house or pees / poops. We seriously didn't do anything to make him so "pure" and smart, we never scolded him or hit him cause there wasn't any need to do so (plus I disagree with hitting dogs even if they behave a little bad)
So the idea of him getting near cars or any potentially dangerous dog breeds (or situation in general) just makes my heart go crazy cause he's the most unique dog ever and if I ever lose him I don't know what I'll do.
Ok so let's move to the issue, whenever I take him on walks I don't usually release his leash so he can go on his own to wherever he pleases, cause the only "bad thing" (not actually bad) he has, is that he's extremely over-confident and likes to go on little adventures, which again, I like it when he does it, the problem comes when he literally wants to run everywhere and sometimes goes to the streets and I start panicking, cause he's not aware of cars at all. Some months ago I lived on a house in front of a bridge (the end of the bridge precisely), there was no parks nearby and I had to walk a few blocks to reach one, so this one day my father told me to "release the leash, he'll just stay on the sidewalk don't worry".
But as soon as I did that he started walking very fast and, as expected, he started to run across the bridge to reach the other side of the street, and there were a lot of cars coming but they were kinda far so I had time to run at him and just pick him up while looking at my dad with angry eyes, I think it's worth saying that I almost never scold Beto or get angry at him for doing this cause this is just the way he is.
The other day I was walking him, and again, had to cross a very wide street so I was waiting for all the cars to pass by so I can run with him (there was no traffic light so I had to calculate). I saw him standing there with me since he always stays still when you tell him to. But I wanted to see if he is still unaware of cars and the danger they represent, so I didn't release the leash but I wanted to let him go a little bit without pulling it, there was a car coming and he just started walking to the street without noticing the car, the same thing happened the next day but this time the car that was passing by was going really slow, HOWEVER my dog almost touches that car cause he was walking straight into it.
What can I do to teach him to just be aware of cars and stay still when they're around? I always take him to parks and release him from the leash there but obviously the park is surrounded by streets so whenever he gets too close to them I become very anxious, oh and, yes, he listens to my calls and knows that he has to follow me always, but as I said, sometimes he becomes very over-confident, what can I do or what kind of trainings are there for cases like this?
