how do i deal with having to put down my cat

My cat Dewey has suddenly gotten really sick over the past couple of days. Everything has been getting rly worse and I don’t know what I’d do if we have to put him down. He is my best friend and is always by my side at home. Within the past day he started eating and standing which I think is good but everyone else in my family thinks we should put him down. We are waiting to take an ultrasound on my cat to figure out if there is a blockage from his kidney to his urine. I need help on how to prepare myself if we do need to put him down. I have never dealt with the death of my own pet before. I got him when I was 9 and now I am 16. He has been my best friend for the past 7 years. He sleeps with me, follows me around the house and comforts me. I need someone’s advice please
