I'm scared to death for my cat to go under anesthesia. Help.

Last night, we realized my cat Wuzzy's face was swollen on the left side; since he has a slight watery eye/allergy like symptoms sometimes we didn't think anything of it until he refused to eat. We immediately took him to the ER vet, where he was diagnosed with a tooth root abscess. Obviously, we have no idea what this is going to cost us in the long run, especially with the blood work and EKG they'll probably want to do - when the vet quoted us $200 PER TOOTH I was shocked, but we'll have to make it work somehow.

What's terrifying me even more than the thought of a $2000+ vet bill is the idea of him going under the anesthesia. The ER vet said to not let the EKG cost dissuade me from not doing the rest - she implied that the EKG could wait, and it'd be hugely helpful if it could, because the animal hospital we go to quoted us 4-500 dollars just for that procedure, but I don't know if I'm comfortable not doing it before he's put under. I'm scared to death he's just not going to wake up, or something bad will happen because I've heard cats can react really badly to anesthesia, and that plus the huge financial burden makes me want to puke. I'm terrified. Can someone please explain how dangerous anesthesia is for cats and why they sometimes don't react well, or give me some type of ELI5 of the procedure so I'm not so afraid?
