Help Solve My Dog's Aggresive(?) Behavior

Hello fellow redditors,

My wife and I adopted an 15 year old basset hound about a year ago. A little background about him and his behaviors:

  1. He was kept outside by the previous owner most of the time.
  2. Fully deaf and half blind, making it a challenge for us to train him. Not potty trained at all, need to put diapers on him.
  3. Very food-motivated. He would run toward his food and eat really fast. If you try to push him away from the food, he'll get defensive and may start barking.
  4. Other than that, majority of the time he is just chill, wander around the house or sleep.

When I'm alone with him. I can pet him however I like (top of the head, scratch his chin, etc.) and he would be ok with it about 90-95% of the time. However, when he is around my wife, if I try to pet him, especially if I tried to scratch his chin, he would growl and bark at me... On the other hand, she can do whatever she wants with him and he would never bark at her.

We're pretty lost on what to do. We have tried to train him by slowly putting my hand underneath his chin, and if he didn't growl, I would give him some treats. Still didn't work that well. I wonder if he just becomes jealous/protective when my wife is around him and he doesn't want anybody else touching him. I'm looking to see If anyone have any thoughts on this or advice on things I could try. Thanks in advance!
