I just wanted to tell somebody about this because it still bugs me to this day. About a year ago I found two stray dogs in separate places on the same day. I already had a dog, a cat and was living in a very small 500 square foot apartment. One of the dogs I kept for a few days and then decided to see if their owner would find them if I brought them to the pound. I could tell this dog had only been out for a few hours before I found her in the park.
now it's important to note that there are two shelters in my area and I live on the border between two cities. One of them is extremely nice, it's indoor, it has very quiet kennels and is really well kept. The other one is an absolute crap show it's incredibly terrifying for dogs. The kennels are extremely loud and they're poorly maintained and they always smell. So I took the first dog to the nicer kennel and she was picked up by her owner within a day.
The second dog I was really worried about. I could tell that his previous owner probably left him outside, he smelled really bad like he had been in the rain for a while. He was extremely hungry when I found him. The area I live in has a lot of sketchy people. And he had a ton of anxiety. I had posted found posters all over the internet on any website I could find. I was absolutely terrified of taking him to the pound because I was worried he wouldn't do well. Like literally sat in my bathroom crying over it because I was worried he would be terrified. He was tearing my house up and my husband was getting low on patience. finally I decided I would try taking him to the nice shelter. I would leave him there for two or three days and if nobody had found him I would just adopt him and try to find him an owner.
So I took him to the nice quiet shelter. I check on him on their website and I realize that they had moved him to the awful shelter across the city It never occurred to me that this could happen. I noticed about 2 days after I had dropped him off. I immediately went to check on him he is absolutely terrified. He had already lost a ton of weight. He had diarrhea. It was cold probably the coldest day of the year. I tried to adopt him but I didn't realize he wasn't neutered and he had to wait three more days to get neutered. It was super bowl weekend so all the vets had taken the weekend off.
I still feel absolutely awful. This particular dog had a lucky ending. Somebody adopted him within the three days that it took for him to get neutered. When I found out that happened I took my own name off the list. The owner found me on Facebook I and thanked him and I check his Facebook every once in awhile. This dog had a happy ending. But I will never take a dog to a kennel ever again.
