What pet for a mostly home working dev

Now, I know that taking a pet is a matter of circumstances. In my case, I'm an analyst dev, so I'll have the opportunity to do home working regularly even after the pandemy.

I am supposed to move house (from my parent to an appartment) soon-ish. That said, I know that being alone isn't going to be the best for me. I also got (potentially) an access to a garden. It's not fenced, so whatever little critter I put there will be able to leave. Lots of nature around, so I'm not expecting him to be ran over, although we've seen foxes in the backyard.

I've never been a fan of cages, and I don't want to take a pet that's going to be lonely when I'm not here (I'm trying to solve my loneliness, not give it to someone else.

Any idea of a pet that could work? I'm kinda afraid of taking a cat with foxes outside.
