Want to adopt a cat but worried about unknown allergies

I’ve never really had pets growing up, aside from hamsters, birds and fish because my mom has asthma and is pretty allergic to dogs and especially cats. I have my own place now and I want to adopt a cat but since I’ve never been exposed to one for a long period of time, I’m not sure if I have allergies that I’m unaware of. I only say this because while I’ve been around cats for hours at a time and never had issues, I pet sat my friends long haired cat and got a single hive on my arm after being at her house for an hour, but had no other issues so I’m not even sure if it was from the cat. I guess I’m wondering if short hair cats are more hypoallergenic, or if the SPCA lets you do a trial run in case you have any issues. I’ve also heard of people with allergies that get used to their own pets so much their allergies go away—has anyone had experience with any of this?
