I put my cat down today, what next?

I’m 20 and my cat was 17 years old; I don’t know of a life without him. I have 5 other cats (my family rescues) but I still have an empty feeling because none of the other cats replace him. He has had a few problems throughout the years and we actually thought we would have to put him down in 2013 when he was diagnosed with pancreatitis, but a miracle happened and we were able to get another 7 years with him.

Yesterday he started to act funny by not eating, sitting in a corner, etc. so when we took him to the vet today. They said he had a urinary blockage and was in pain. It would have been almost $2,000 to relieve him but it was also inevitable that it would come back as most urinary blockages reoccur.

He has been looking really out of shape the last year or so (he was literally skin and bones and would have a really hard time walking down the stairs) so we made the decision to put him out of pain because his kidneys and liver were also in bad condition and he did not seem to have much of a quality of life anymore.

I’m just not really sure how to deal with it. I’ve been crying on/off but my life isn’t going to stop to let me grieve. I have work tomorrow and I’m also enrolled in a really tough biology class currently.

How did you guys deal with the death of a pet? And when did you feel better?
