Lost my kitten a week ago, now I’m paranoid about my recent adopted kitten’s bathroom cries. Need advice.

I adopted a orange tabby kitten who is 6 weeks. I was told he wasn’t nursing anymore and on dry food, but it took some convincing with a tiny drizzle of gravy on his dry food to get him to begin eating.

I noticed he’s been crying and straining to defecate, and his poop is quite big when he does go.

He drinks often enough and eats, but I’m starting to think that because he’s on dry food, maybe he’s not getting an adequate amount of water which is resulting in constipation and a build up of waste that is too large for him to pass without painfully straining.

Some people are telling me to bring him to the vet, while others are saying that it’s probably normal because he ‘just got off the nipple.’ This is been going on for four days now. He refuses to touch wet food no matter what I do to it.

I’m not sure if I’m being paranoid. My last kitten passed from renal failure and that devastated me. I’m far from over it and every little sneeze has me wanting to rush him to the emergency vet.

Please, any advice about what to do would be appreciated. I’ve considered a water fountain, but I have a feeling that wouldn’t help.
