I'm 17, and I live alone with my dad and my dog. He's around 12, we rescued him in 2009 and it was assumed (by the people we got him from) he was around two then, so he's pretty old now. He's a Japanese Chin, and still super energetic and pretty much acts like he did when he was a pup, so we weren't super concerned for his health for a while. I didn't know/wasn't able to do anything when I was younger and my dad would never take him to the vet, even for vaccinations (he did get them when we rescued him, but we stopped going to annuals around 2015 ish). Anyways, he had an issue with his eye a while ago, and I guess I was distressed enough and my dad saw a physical abnormality so he let me take him to the vet. While we were there he got prescribed medicine and we got the bill, although my dad wasn't ecstatic about the price. In a phone call (since we couldn't go in) the vet told me that they had discovered a level 4 heart murmur, and that they wanted to do x-rays, but also an echocardiogram at some later point because they weren't doing any during quarantine. My dad basically said "no thanks" and left. I tried talking to him about it later, and his argument is essentially "I'm not going to invest all that money into an old dog only to have him live two more years". The thing is, this dog is my literal pride and joy. I know that he's older, and probably will be gone in the next year or two, but I don't want to see him suffer if he does have a heart disease. I just don't know how to convince my dad to at least let him be diagnosed so we can try to make life comfortable for him, not even that we would have to get the medicine (if any were suggested). I just want to know if we should be adjusting his daily exercise, making sure he should stay away from certain habits, or looking out for abnormal behaviors. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**Note, we took him to the vet on April 3rd. So, it's been a while of me just trying to figure out the right wording to make him understand :/
