My cat is around eight years old and has been an outdoor cat his entire life, we adopted him from a shelter that found him outside an abandoned house. When we first got him, he was less than a year old. We tried keeping him indoors, and for a while it was working well. But he would always meow at the doors and try to escape. Then, he started peeing on our couch every night. We had to replace almost every cushion, and we gave up and started letting him go outside. He is now eight years old as I said. He sleeps most of the day indoors, goes out periodically, and insists on being outside at night. His ability to be an outdoor cat is dependent on the neighborhood we live in being so quiet and free of predators, but if we moved, I’m not sure what we’d do. I also feel bad because I know cats can wreak havoc on native wildlife and can be a nuisance. This is why I want to start making him an indoor cat, but I am not sure how to with his history of ruining furniture. Any advice on how I should transition him, knowing he might start peeing on everything in retaliation?
