I’m a hardcore animal lover. Rescued baby birds growing up, took in stray dogs, full blown presentations to the parents when I wanted another type of animal. I see them all for little souls of their own and I get a kick out of having unique connections with each one.
Recently my family adopted an older breeder- dog who needed a home, not soon after a new puppy to keep her company. I always try to make interactions fun, playful, petting, training, etc, and the puppy’s spirit is great, runs to greet me everytime I come downstairs. But no matter what I do, the older dog (named “lady” 4yo) literally looks depressed and dosent even come to me unless it’s out of jealousy I’m giving the puppy attention, even when I reach out to her first. And I do try, to give her firsts, in dog language the dominant one eats first, walks through doors (often) first, etc, so I try to uphold that to make her feel like this is her place. But she dosent care, even if I’m gonna for hours and walk in excited to see them, if I want to take her out on walks, or anything, no reaction.
I thought maybe this was just readjusting to her new home, but it’s been 5 months. Tail wagging ? RARE. I mean rare. Lady only, ONLY perks up when I offer her food. But that builds the habit of begging unless I make it a habit they leave the kitchen or wherever I’m eating after I share, but when I ask her to- even if not yelling- she acts scared like I’m about to beat her or something. I want all of my animals to be genuinly happy and there to be a good vibe between us so this kinda sucks to see and has made me question maybe my normal all-American family home setup isn’t the one for her ? maybe she needs a ranch or open fields to be more involved with animals, idk. I was thrilled to get the puppy to help brighten her mood, but nothing.
If anyone has any thoughts or ideas please share, this makes me sad and being the big baby I am kinda hurts my feelings and I don’t wanna take it personal lol but I’m confused, I been nothing but kind and loving to this dog for about half a year and she wants nothing to do w me
