Chronic cat diarrhea/family wants to put him down

My cat is in danger of being put down. He has horrible chronic diarrhea and it's ruining the house of the family I live with. They are his official owners but I love him like my own. He is a neutered domestic long-hair who we think is about 6 years old but we don't really know. When we last took him the vet he was 8 pounds but he gained weight over quarantine as he tricked his owners into feeding him double for a few months (the diarrhea was the same before the over-eating and during and after). He lives with a 2 year old Siamese, a yorkie, and a pug, none of whom get diarrhea. He was rescued from a hoarder house with lots of other cats two years ago. When we got him from a shelter we knew he had diarrhea issues but the family thought they would be solvable. Unfortunately he's had chronic diarrhea non-stop since we adopted him. He will use the litter box but also will also go on the carpet every few days. He often wipes his butt on the carpet and has poop on him after he goes. It turns his fur and the carpet yellow but the poop itself is dark brown and is the texture of a cow pie. They've taken him to the vet so many times and there has been no firm diagnosis. They've run every test. They've tried different diets, enzymes, and probiotics. He's an extremely nervous cat but he always seems in good spirits. Unfortunately I don't have access to his vet info. The owners of the home want to put him down if they can't figure out what's wrong with him as they don't think he is adoptable (they got him the day before he was going to be put down). I don't know what to do but I'll try anything to save him. Please help! (CA)
