Does getting a new pet help with the loss of another?

I recently had to put my cat down and loved him so much. The best animal I’ve ever owned.

My question is, has anyone gotten a new pet to help with the loss of another? Or is this a deep rabbit hole that I will never be able to fill? How did it work out if you did?

I should mention I have one living female cat who I think is bored from the loss of her friend as well. I want to get her another friend but don’t want to feel like I’m filling a wound that can’t be repaired.

Maybe an entirely different species of animal would be better?
