Preface: We took him to the medical center on Saturday and they gave us medication for an eye infection he had as well as a flea problem. Both are better now, and we're taking him to a primary care vet today to see what our next steps are.
That being said - we've never had a cat before and honestly don't know how to spend time with him. With the bit of reading I did, it suggested leaving him in one room (especially because he's a stray) to get acclimated to being indoors and the new environment, and then slowly introducing him to other areas of the house. But we notice that he's been peeing/pooping outside the litter box (which he used the very first time without us directing him) and I think that's due to stress as he was also hissing.
He's very calm when we hold him, but because he's soooooo tiny (and also him being a kitten, about 4 weeks old) I'm not sure whether we can have him with us in the living area and generally what we should be doing to make sure he's comfortable.
