This cat has been around for a while and has actually had some previous kittens under this same porch a few months ago. She's very nervous around people and pretty much would never let me get close to her/wouldn't come close to me. Regardless, I would feed her things like bacon, left over chicken, milk, etc a few months ago. Eventually they seemed to leave the porch because I hadn't seen them under there. Fast forward a couple of months and we noticed this new litter of kittens and this same mother cat back under the porch.
I really want to try befriending the cat and her kittens but I guess I just don't know what to do. I have fed them chicken this morning and I was able to get the kittens to walk out and eat the chicken. I was even able to pick up and hold 2 of the 4 kittens so I think that befriending the kittens will be the easy part. But I'm trying to befriend the mother and I feel like it's taking forever because she's still not comfortable around me although I do think she's at least somewhat comfortable considering she's still under the porch after all these months. What should I do? I want to set a small box out there for them to sleep in. I know that they don't really need it but I think they'd like it better than than being out in the dirt behind the bushes.
Any tips on getting a cat comfortable with you?
