dog has a wide hole in his leg

My dog has an odd hole in his leg, very confused, taking him to the vet in the morning but curious to if anyone knows what it is. I put neosporin in it and wrapped it so he cant bite at it anymore. Most google searches says to just take care of it and its just a wound but its odd to me how deep it is.
