Moving on Saturday, with an anxious cat. What's the best way to do this?

I am moving from 1-bedroom to 2-bedroom apartment. I see two options:

1. Bring everything in our bedroom to the moving truck, then lock cat with his litter box, food and water, bed and his favorite throw in the room, until we are done. Then, my wife can drive our car to the new place, bring the cat to the second bedroom with all his things, feed him, close the door and leave him there until we finish unloading the truck
2. Bring the cat to the new place with all his stuff, and let him explore freely while we load our truck at our current apartment. When we arrive to the new one, bring the cat in the 2nd bedroom, feed him, close the door and unload the truck

For a fairly anxious cat, what do you think the best option would be? I'm leaning towards option #2

Edit: Cat pheromones for the new place, yay or nay considering all his stuff will be with him, which already has his scent?
