Why is my dog so unempathetic towards me?

I used to have a siamese cat since he was a baby, and I was a child. He wasn’t the most friendly cat ever, but whenever I felt sad or cried, he would lay on my chest and purr, or follow me around the house. He passed away at age 10 from a heart attack.

We then adopted a puppy which turned out to be a greyhound mix. She was abandoned but we took her in when she was a month old, now she’s 2 years old. She dislikes children, strangers, so you know she ain’t the most friendly dog either. When I’m in a nice mood, she’ll follow me around, wanna play and generally cuddles a lot. But when I’m sad, she’ll look at me wide eyed and runs away.

I’d really love if she was more empathetic towards me, as it makes me feel even worse her reaction. Is there any way I can teach her to just stay? Or my relationship with my cat was different as we grew up together?
