I'm afraid my new kitten has made my 3 year old cat unhappy and I'm wondering if I should find a new home for my kitten or if I should give it more time.

Dear reddit,

This is my first post, so I’m sorry if I made any mistakes.

I would like some advice whether it’s a good idea to keep my kitten or find him a new home.

I’ve had my first cat for 3 years now and he’s super sweet and I love him A lot. He will sleep on my lap or on a chair next to me and he loves to play with me and my boyfriend. Since I only have online classes now, I noticed how much my cat wanted to play and that 20 minutes of play wasn’t enough and he wanted to play longer. He would meow until we played or he gave up ad I felt bad for him, but I couldn’t always play with him because I have other things to do as well.

I got the idea that maybe a kitten playmate would be nice for him to have, because they could play with each other when I couldn’t and they could give each other company when nobody is at home. After some research, it seemed more like a good idea than a bad one.

I’ve adopted a kitten and he’s really sweet as well, he really likes attention. we’ve almost have had him for 2 months now.

The problem is that I’m not sure if my cat is as happy as he was before we got the kitten. They sleep near each other and they play together, like running after each other and playfighting, but the kitten also bothers my cat a lot. My kitten will keep attacking my cat’s tail or tackling my cat while he’s trying to sleep, eat, drink etc and my cat only walks away. Only recently my cat started meowing and hissing a little bit when the kitten is bothering him too much, but the kitten isn’t impressed enough to really stop. Sometimes the kitten also seems to act out in jealousy, like chasing away my cat from our lap or a certain spot, just to lay there himself.

I’ve read that it could take multiple months or maybe even a year before they truly will have gotten used to each other, but I’m really afraid that I’ve made my cat unhappy, because he doesn’t want to play at all anymore. No matter what toys I use, if I play simultaneously with the kitten or without the kitten in the room, he barely looks at his toys anymore. He went from continuously wanting to play with us. To not playing at all anymore, except for the occasional chase with the kitten. It really makes me sad, because he was more active before the kitten and now my cat mostly sleeps. I just really hope he doesn’t hate it here now and that he’s just trying to act cool or something in front of the kitten. Sometimes it seems my cat is going to play, but then he’s remembers that the kitten is here and he stops.

I wondering if I should find a new home for my kitten if my cat has truly become unhappy, or that I should give them more time and that my cat will start playing again. I love them both, but my first cat is very special to me. I'm having a hard time, because the kitten is still young and could adjust more easily to a new home now than if I wait too long. And the longer I wait the harder it gets for everyone.

Thanks in Advance!

TLDR; bought a kitten as a playmate for my 3year old cat, because I couldn’t play as much as he wanted to, but now he doesn’t play at all anymore. Is my cat unhappy and should I find a new owner for the kitten or give them more time to adjust?
