My cat is chill with the new kitten, but the kitten is not :(

Hello, this is my first time posting here on reddit (please be nice :c) My resident cat is already a 1 year old male and I noticed that he keeps wanting to go outside to play with the neighbor cat. So I thought of getting a new cat/kitten for him as his companion so I recently got a new female kitten that is approximately 3-4mo old. My cat seems to be welcoming with the kitten (with of course having a few hisses in the first meeting since he just wants to sniff around stuffs when we got home). I haven't let them meet each other in close proximity (where they would easily reach each other). But I let them see each other in a distance while I entertain the kitten with a cat wand and toys, while my cat just observes silently. I also exchange their scents by exchanging collars and blankets. My cat has been 'chirping' or meowing in a high pitched meow and he also slowly blinks at her and sleeps while she stares at him. But my kitten keeps growling and hissing at him if wants to check her out. It somehow resulted for my cat to be somewhat submissive, which makes me sad about it since he just wanted to greet the kitten. But the kitten is not mean to me or anything and seems to like my presence. What could I do to stop the kitten from being mean to my older cat? I just want them to get along :(
