Neighbors called the cops on us for OUR PET

First time post here but I need some help/advice from the redit community!

I have a senior cat (16 year old) named Mojo! He’s incredibly friendly and has been indoor/outdoor his entire life. Prior to us having him, he was a farm cat. At our previous 12 unit apartment complex, he was known by all neighbors and everyone loved him. We moved about 2 years ago and since have adapted Mojo to yet again be indoor/outdoor. He stays out majority of the day after being fed and comes home around 6 to eat and stay in for the night. He has started to venture to this townhouse property next door, where once again he is well loved and loves the attention. I have been able to make friends with everyone who knows and loves mojo, especially this one woman Michelle(the star of this post) where we would find Mojo every night in the backyard.

I would find him at her door, found out she was feeding him and let her know that due to health concerns, we ask that Mojo not be fed. She said she would stop and we had a pleasant conversation where we exchanged information to text whenever we were out at night looking for Mojo and suspected he might be in the backyard. Everything was great and we were texting regularly and respecting one another whenever we interacted. She would tell me up and down (always making a point to tell me) that she NEVER let Mojo in her house.

My husband and I started noticing that Mojo had a scent on him whenever we would go get him, a scent that was the exact same scent coming from her home whenever she opened her door. We decided to buy a tracker that we placed on his collar so we could find him easier at night. The tracker would beep whenever we were just about 16 feet from him. We would stand at the gate separating the curb from her backyard and push the button but get no response. Once we knocked on her door she would say let me check the backyard, close the door, and then suddenly say “oh here he is” which is when we would magically hear the beeping noise”. As we became more suspicious due to this situation, him not being cold/wet on days where an outdoor cat would have been, but mostly the scent... my husband decided to mention it and this is when things took a turn.

Last night, as her boyfriend was handing mojo back to my husband over the fence, my husband said that it’s too much of a coincidence that you always seem to find Mojo in the backyard once we knock and you go look, yet we don’t hear anything when we buzz his tracker. The guy said he swears they don’t let him in the house, my husband just asked that if they are to please not as this sends mixed messages to the pet on where “ home” is. Guys said they haven’t, my husband thanked him for our cat and we moved on. About 1 hour later we have a knock at our door from our county sheriffs department and I have 3 cops and a sheriff at our door step claiming that this woman has filed a complaint because my husband and I have been trespassing into their backyard to get our cat and also that Mojo is attacking her chickens ( they have no chickens) so they completely lied to the police. They asked what’s been going on and we explained the exact story above. He let us know that moving forward they would be blocking their fence hole that mojo has used to get in the back (won’t help as he still climbs fences and they know this) and asked that we stay away from their apartment.

I am beyond upset as this is ridiculous to have the cops involved (especially because these are bold lies). I have talked with the landlord of the property today and brought him up to speed (he loves mojo and was shocked to hear this) and he let me know that I was allowed to be on the walkway out front I just couldn’t go into their backyard (DUH)! I’m just now worried that Mojo isn’t going to understand and obviously still venture into that yard and at that point, how do I get him back? Do I need to call the police every single night to come and get out cat from them? We are investing in a high quality tracker at this point so we can prove location but does anyone have any suggestions/experience with this to provide some feedback on the laws behind this and what we should do moving forward! Anything will help! Thanks everyone! :)
