Advice for keeping indoor cats while a full-time working living in a 1/1?

Hi all and happy holidays! I (22M) just moved into my first 1/1 and am very happy with it. I work in an animal hospital and just adopted a ~4 month old kitten (microchipped and all). I’ll be adopting a ~1.5 year cat in the next week from a moving coworker. I had the idea of keeping the kitten in my bedroom and the adult cat in the living room while they get accustomed. The kitten is already very happy in her new home, just meows anxiously when I put her in my room when I’m leaving the house. :( I make sure to provide her with a lot of self-play toys and accessories.

I grew up in a woodsy area with indoor-outdoor cats, so these are my first indoor only cats. The adult is known the dart in her current home and I’m afraid of her escaping while getting adjusted. She is kennel-trained, but I’d feel so bad keeping her in a small kennel while away for 11 hours on my work days.

Any advice? I had the idea of buying a large dog crate for each of them, as my area has some used ones for sale... do those actually work? Are they uncomfortable? I wanna make sure my cats are as comfortable as possible while living in our new space!

TLDR: How can I keep my kitten and adult cat in a 1/1 and avoid possible future door-darting behavior when I arrive home from 11-hour shifts or errands? I’m very worried about the possibility.
